The Tudors

"The Tudors" the story of the infamous King Henry VIII of England was recently recommended to me, and at first I was skeptical, thinking it would be full of anti-Catholic Church stuff, but when I noticed the first two seasons (out of 4) were available for free online viewing by netflix I thought I'd give it a go. And I have to say after just 20 episodes (2 seasons worth) This has easily become one of my favorite tv shows. Granted its not completely historically accurate, but they do a great job with the story of Henry VIII and England during this time.

My biggest concern was the possibility of anti-Catholic sentiment, but I was completely stunned at how favorable the Church and faith are presented in the story, granted some of the church teaching is misunderstood in the writing of the script, but such errors are a rarity. Henry VIII is presented as the main character and shows his descent from a protagonist to an antagonist, and the Church is really presented in a positive light, especially those that stood up to Henry who are shown as courageous heroes.

I really wish I could see more productions with such a high quality as this, the show was made for pure entertainment and wasn't even made as a Catholic production and yet it has some of the most faith inspiring episodes and scenes that make me so proud to be Catholic.

Sir Thomas More (played by Jeremy Northam) is one of the main characters of the show, and the way they told his story was absolutely brilliant; perhaps the most inspiring episode of the whole series is the one where he is martyred for the Church. Cinema legend Peter O'Toole is magnificent as Pope Paul III, and johnathan rhys meyers plays a great Henry VIII. The acting is really first class all around. But Henry VIII, Pope Paul III, and Sir Thomas More, and Queen Catherine, really stand out as having remarkable performances.

The only real negative of the series is the nudity and the excess of graphic "love" scenes. which a simple fast forward will remedy. But all in all its supremely entertaining, I was hooked from the very first episode, and am working on acquiring the second half of the series.

Question!

So my uncle is getting married...again. He did not receive an annulment from his last marriage. His remarriage is not in the Church. Instead, it's just a civil service with a justice of the peace. Is it okay for me to attend this?

Lives Of The Saints

I met with my spiritual director on Wednesday and he suggested that I read up on the lives of the Saints. Anyone have any suggestions on books that are fairly easy to understand but not dumbed down? Like, say on a scale of 1-10, 1 being "My First Bible" and 10 being Aquinas' "Summa Theologica" (in English, of course), I'm looking for something between a 5 and an 8. I've already got "Story of a Soul" under my belt.
