Black Eyed Peas use to be good in 98 99. They even took shots at Puffy. Now look at em... they are far worse than Puff the Magic Dragon.
But Public Enemy, Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Black Moon, Fugess, Hieroglyphics, BDP, Treacherous Three, good groups...good groups.

This basically sums it up. I loved BEP initially. C'mon, "Joints and Jam" anyone? I don't hate them now, and I think pop music probably suits their skill set better, but it is kinda sad to see them go from "conscious rappers" to mainstream showmen (and lady).
As far as best groups ever I'd have to say, in no particular order... Wu Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, the Roots, and - this may be a long shot - but the Lost Boyz.

In 98-99, i thought they were falling up... they fell off. DW I enjoyed listening to those groups except PE---and i did not really have opportunities to hear Treacherous Three. That reminds me, it was awesome for me to discover the Fearless four "Rockin it!"

Black Eyed Peas were not always so pop and have been around a long time. They'd probably make my top 10 in hip-hop groups--just based on their earlier stuff alone.
A few groups I think should be in the discussion which I don't think have been mentioned: Jurassic 5, Gang Starr, and definitely Outkast.

You can still pretend you were there. I do :) I"m not that old, but I love popping in some old Gang Star and so forth, and just loosing myself.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot Outkast. Shows how much I've faded from the hip hop scene. They are top 3 IMO, no question.
