I missed the part where the Tiara actually ISN'T dropped from the papal coat of arms, or at least there is confusion as to whether or not it is....

well, at least that's what Wikipedia says:

Quote

For a millennium until the reign of Benedict XVI it had been one of the ornaments surrounding a Pope's personal coat of arms. In a controversial break with tradition, on the first version of Benedict's personal coat of arms the tiara was replaced with the papal mitre. The mitre contains three levels reminiscent of the three tiers on the papal tiara.[3] This was the first such use since Pope Paul VI prohibited the use of mitres and croziers on coats of arms in 1969.[4] However the Vatican subsequently issued documents which contained Benedict's coat of arms showing a tiara, not a mitre. It is unclear whether the initial arms announced have been withdrawn, or whether it is proposed to use two alternate designs, a "personal" set of arms with a mitre, and an official "state" set of arms for Benedict with a tiara.

Hmm very interesting indeed, since the one with the mitre apears on many things that are "official"

Yay, Pope Benedict! Heh, I'm a papal fangirl. He has an awesome garden in his backyard. I do like the papal tiara in the Coat of Arms; looks much more kingly.

there's either a tiara or a bishop's miter above the coat of arms

I don't think many, except some traditionalists who don't understand who ratzinger is, expected him to have a coronation. Paul VI laid it down (but apparently still expected his successor to be coronated) but John Paul I and John Paul II both refused to be coronated... no one expected Benedict to be coronated. They were surprised at him taking out the tiara from the coat of arms though, but now who knows what the final word on the coat of arms will be

Lets go steal all the things that have his coat of arms on it with the mitre, draw the tiara over it in marker, and put them back. He will never notice.

added some stuff on the side. if it's a stretched out chi-rho symbol you need to refresh the page (because your comp is just showing you the pic it normally sees, refreshing will make it ask for the new image)

I really do like both versions.

I understand the use of the tiara, and it's non-use.

The point has been made that using the tiara would express a deeper unity with our Orthodox breathern, and no doubt that this would be the case (for they wear crowns).

I thinki the introduction of the pallium and the bishop's mitre instead of the tiara express Pope Benedict's approach to visually put faith into the Bishop's of the church.

It has been speculated that he is trying to strengthen the role of the Bishop in thier immediate jurisdictions and lessen the role (albeit mostly a percieved though not realistically present) "activity" of the Pope into the diocese.

I think this is also, in a way to gain the confidence of the Orthodox(and Eastern catholics), who put much more emphasis on thier Bishops/Patriarch's than we do on our's (in the West/Latin Rite).

a compromise could be the earlier form of the tiara:
