Being Catholic is like winning the lottery.
Eustace, that "you didn't get healed because you lack faith" thing always gets me. If you go by the argument that physical wellness equals great faith, then how come we read this list about the apostles? Were they lacking faith? Just remember that your trials have purpose. Don't listen to those who obviously don't understand. Prayers for your inquiry about the Church...come on home! (I am a convert too, btw. :) I was Southern Baptist)
Matthew--killed with a sword
Mark--dragged to death by horses
Luke--hanged
Peter--crucified upside down
James the Just--clubbed to death after being thrown down a hundred feet from the temple
James son of Zebedee--beheaded
Bartholomew--flayed to death with a whip
Andrew--crucified, took 2 days to die
Thomas--stabbed to death with a spear
Jude--killed with arrows
Matthias--stoned and then beheaded
Barnabas--stoned to death
Paul--tortured and beheaded

i heard of a case of where one of the most ridiculous Charismatics said that they came back from Iran thinking that their "health, wealth, and prosperity gospel" was wrong, because of how it would explain martyrdom and persecution. he went back on that as far as i know, sadly, but at least his mind opened for a bit.
btw not all Charismatics believe that. the ones i associate with believe that prayer is uniting with God's will and asking for it, whatever it is, to occur. however, they do think that God will heal most people, so i sometimes hear some ridiculous stuff...
i have had at least two or three instantaneous healings, though, so i don't think that they don't happen.
btw you forgot to mention the stoning of Stephan. not to mention that passage about the "Heroes of the Faith" chapter in... Hebrews?? where it's mentioned how God's prophets suffered because "the world was not worthy of them." the reference to being sawed in half in that chapter, i'm told, refers to King Mannasseh of Judah doing that to Isaiah... yyyyyyyyyeesh...
i'm looking for a cheap or free copy of St. Theresa of Avila's book about suffering... a friend gave me a rundown on it and i found it to be very encouraging... :)
