Interested in checking out various religious communities, but don't know where to look?
Look no further than
Belknap's Directory of Religious Life Communities!!!
There's a bunch of cool orders listed with them, and some that...aren't so cool...but if you need any help distinguishing, contact myself or another member of the Church Faithful!

My personal oppinion is to know what it is your looking for and then ask some people who are in the know and are trustworthy (read orthodox). Cuase if not then your on like a wild vocation chase and you visit so much you dont know what from what. focus... this isnt vocation shopping.. It is discernment- big difference

The CMSWR (Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious) directory is a great resource for women discerning religious life. You can go to their website
here.

First of all, I am posting with my daughter's username, because I haven't created one for myself yet.
Second. My younger (14 year old) daughter is interested in becoming a nun. When you look in this directory, how do you know which orders are vibrant, alive and faithful to the magisterium?

I think the best way to find out is to visit the community, and learn more about the orders' history, and talking with other communities sometimes helps, asking one community about another.

I second Drewmeister's thoughts!
Generally, the orders that still have habits and are getting young vocations are the vibrant ones. The CMSWR is where a lot of the good active communities are (although I don't think the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist and the Sister Servants of the Eternal Word are in yet, but they will be someday!).
She can look at some of the websites of the orders listed and see which ones interest her and then maybe go visit some. Visiting is the only way you can tell because you get to see how the community works, how faithful they are, how vibrant they are, and how you interact with them.

http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/country/xrel.htmlAnother ref list, with abbreviations! But, it has only those orders who have had / have one of their order who is a bishop. But it is a fairly big list, with the abbreviations and nicknames.

With all due respect, I would not recommend consulting Vision for assistance with discernment. Most of the order with whom they are in affiliation seem new-age, and I've seen some books advertised in there that are by authors who are heretics.

i agree....there are very few orders featured in vision that even have modified habits....most that i've seen in the mags wear lay clothes and aren't very traditional
the CMSWR as photosynthesis suggested was the most help for me when i was looking.

The best link that I know of is
www.religiouslife.com/webfact
It is up to date and that is where we found most of the Communities that attend the HERE I AM LORD Vocations Conferences for Teens and Young Adults.
We have them linked at our website www.hereiamlord.net

With VisionGuide, be careful when requesting information from some orders. lol. It's a great idea, but you may not want to ask for information from a gazillion orders at the same time. I was literally receiving like basketfulls of mail. Well, it basicallly added it to around that much. lol. It becomes quite overwhelming. So, take it one or two at a time, read, listen, pray carefully about it and continue to carefully discern.

How do you know that the Orders are faithful to the Magisterium?
This website is for sure:

www.religiouslife.comI know these are repeats, but it's worth mentioning. I personally know many of these Sisters and know that they are in this line....

You see based on their life whether they are being obedient to Rome. i.e., Do they wear a habit? (It is obvious that Rome strongly encourages this, and it is extremely questionable whether it is even optional in countries where religious persecution is not prevalent). Do they
actually live the vow of poverty? Do they have the authentic spirit of their founder and Rule? Are a substantial number of the Order's members heretical? (I would venture to say that the Jesuits went through a period of time where this was the case). I don't really understand how it could be hard to see whether an Order is faithful or not.

Hi. The SMME are members of the CMSWR, although I haven't seen anything on there of the Sister Servants.
Another recommendation for you, if it hasn't been mentioned before, is to find a good and holy spiritual director who can assist you in your vocational visits and search. I was lucky. My pastor recommended going to the Welcome Mass of the PCPA nuns here in Phoenix, and it was through them that I found my own vocation, to the PCPA in Portsmouth OH, (also part of the Hanceville PCPAs). Praised be Jesus Christ!
God bless you in your search. I will pray for you.

Do you believe the Jesuits are better now than they used to be? Seems like I never hear anything positive about them.
I'm curious about the points you made about living the authentic spirit and vow of poverty. Could you expand more on what that should look like? I ask because I feel drawn to the Franciscans, specifically the Friars of the Renewal or Conventuals. I know the vow of poverty means you don't own lots of stuff. However, I visited the home of six brothers and their living room included a nice-sized HDTV with surround sound, DVD player, Xbox, etc. Their living conditions aren't that bad either... it's not the lap of luxury, but it's not what I picture as poverty either. Legally, it all belongs to the church, but to me that sounds like a nice way of obeying the letter of the law while breaking the spirit of the law.
Maybe I'm too idealistic? But I'm reading about Francis of Assisi and this doesn't seem to be what he had in mind.
