Ok, are there any orders of priests in America that are like St. Francis or St. Dominic when they started? I mean, are there any orders that would be here one week preaching or giving a retreat, and somewhere else the next week? I understand that I'm being rather vague, but this is something I see that there might be a need for, and when I think of it, have a deep attraction to. Thanks

The closest I know is this:

The Flying Fathers.

Their founder Father Costello is an enduring legend in the area of Timmins, Ontario Canada (my home town!).

Father Costello was one of the best. He was the assistant for the Toronto Maple Leafs during his hayday in the NHL and won four stanley cups, and when he finished his career, he decided to become a priest.

To americans, that is like having your high-school football quarter back superstar, go on to have an NFL career, win 4 superbowls and return to his home town as a priest! A book on his life was released afew weeks ago (I have a copy, signed by the author).

Father Costello, as JPII, was also mentionned as a candidate for SaintHood (he passed away a couple of years ago), however in living years he specifically rejected the notion of becoming a saint, saying "My life is to say that being a good person and a devout catholic is the work of all men, not solely that of saints and angels".

*sniff* He was a good man, a devout priest, and he is direly missed in our community.

Hi! You're talking about itinerant preaching. Actually the Dominicans still do that although not as many as before, mainly because you need a lot more friars in a house to do that. Even in St. Dominic's time there would be enough friars in a priory to keep the observance going while brothers were out on the road.

Are there any orders that do that today in America?

Please accept my correction. Father Costello won the Stanley Cup once, not four times.

he was still the assitant captain, anextraordinary man and a legend in his own right... at least for us small town people of Timmins.

His funeral in 2002 was the biggest the northern region of Ontario Canada had ever held, and still many speak of him with fond memories that pinch at the heart.

I'm not certain, but the Fathers of Mercy, do retreats all over the US. In the dioceses of Green bay one week, in Evansville the next!
