WOOOOHOOOO!

I got my fabric in the mail to make my postulant uniforms, my nighties, and my apron! I wasn't sure where to post this but was bubbling over so I had to start a new thread! I suppose this is where I'll do my countdown! I leave April 22nd!

That's awesome!
I'm scared for making my postulant uniform! I don't have any of the info yet, but I couldn't sew if my life depended on it, and my mom is always travelling for work. It's bad when the 12 year old inner city girls say things like, "You don't want Miss Jenny to help you unless you be really desperate!"
Random question: do you sew your habit when you're a postulant?

Well, my mother is, as well as being a nurse, a seamstress. SCORE!
As for the habit itself, yes, you do help sew it, with the assistance of whoever is the seamstress.

Well my mom's strong point isn't creating patterns. I was given an extra dress and told to either find a close pattern or make a pattern. I'm going to be working with someone to make a pattern.
Same thing with the apron.
You should SEE the nightgown! It's beautiful!
I also like to cut out. I love to sew but don't have a machine, so I let my mom help because she's good at it. you know?
Your sister!

It is floor length, cream colored, with long sleeves with the 'romantic' type ruffles on them. The collar is flat with a couple of buttons. I will, apparently have a head covering to wear at night, praise be to Jesus!
Even our night clothes are wonderful!

You know what's really weird? When I tried on the jumper and especially, I think, the apron, my visit came flooding back for me.. When I visited I was in the cloister and so, of course, when doing various chores, I too, wore a long brown apron. It just made me so giddy, reminding me of being there before, and reminding me that soon I would return.

Denise,
I'm very excited about your entrance and all but sheesh, what is it about girls and clothes? You send me a PM wondering whether I've seen your new post and how excited you are and it's because you got some cloth in the mail?!?? Give me a break!
I'm just ribbing you (for the most part anyway). I really am happy you're so happy.

If you have any problems with the pattern you might want to give Sr. Gabriel a call, she is the seamstress for OLAM and sews all of their jumpers and habits. She might be able to send you a pattern or something. If you need the phone number PM me.
Your night habit (I believe that is its proper name) sounds like the one that I saw in Sr. Lauren's wardrobe. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of it, I didn't think anybody would care what it looked like. What was I thinking?

Just to put a picture with the name, this is Sr. Gabriel. She's from Houston too.

Hmmmmm I remember when I was at OLAM about 12 yrs ago, my 'work' was to help Sr Gabriel. Maybe I will ask Sr Marie Ste Claire if she could call OLAM and ask if they have a pattern. Instead of me doing so on my own. that's a cool idea! Thanks!
And stop it already! It just means that I am that much closer to entering!

LOL IF sending rocks was part of the process or if the fabric was

, I would have been excited about that too.

I don't think so. I was told that all of the sisters wear the same cream colored nightgowns, with night time veils or head coverings.

Feb 15 2006, 04:36 PM
Oh! I will be making two jumpers. I 'm not sure which is for which. Perhaps as they get used more often and one appears a little more 'worn' than the other, that will be the work jumper and the other the regular one. Same situation for the habit once I receive that. At least, when I was a postulant before, that was what we did. I've heard of sisters sleeping in their habit. I am not sure, after we receive the scapular, for instance, if that will be a part of the night wear (one for sleep) or not. so many new things to learn!
Yours in Jesus,
Denise

I am just wondering do you guys make your own habit?? Also what would happen if one didnt know how to sew?
HisChild
Feb 15 2006, 05:55 PM
Yes, you do make your own habit. If you do not know how to sew, I would imagine that you would be taught. However, there is a sister seamstress who also helps you. Perhaps all you do is cut out the fabric. I don't know to what extent you participate. Of course someone has to help you with measuring etc. I just don't know exactly how much is on *you* to do.

I took sewing in Jr and Hi school. But I haven't had a machine in about a decade. I would LOVE LOVE

to sew. But it's all up to Mother and what she assigns of you.

Oh my golly Denise! This is soooo exciting to read! I am so tickled that you are so generous in sharing your last few months with us...It is giving me hope & is giving me ideas of what to expect if I enter there...

(I wish there was a nun smiley face) Of course, I could not sew to save myself at this moment in time, but I am willing to learn...And to have a night veil too! What a wonderful reminder to have...How beautiful! Deo Gratias! Brandelyn (Oh, & good luck in getting your wardrobe together! I always wondered if they were handmade...)

Denise, What did you wear when you visited the PCPA's? I thought about getting a simple black dress...And how long were you visiting in the cloister? I thought I remember Mother saying it would be for 2 days...Ah, but since I work midnights my memory sometimes plays tricks on me...

Thanks much, Brandelyn

I just wore long skirts and sweaters. Remember I visited in November, so it was cold.

I was there a total of 4 days, but only 2full days. The other two I had to travel to/from Columbus.
I could have gone for longer, I suppose, but those were the days I had off. Just be modest and you will be ok.
