While browsing the booths around the Here I am Lord Conference with Sr. Mary Michael, I came across the
The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and felt touched by their apostolate, which is caring for those stricken with cancer until their death. In more detail from their webpage:
"Our apostolate is to nurse and shelter incurable cancer patients who cannot afford care elsewhere. All care is free. No payments are accepted either from patients or their families, nor from Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance."
I wanted to share with everyone because I think they are a beautiful community with a great spirit!
Check out their video on their website!

Ohhhhh I just gave their video away! They are a great bunch of sisters. I was discerning with them for a while, actually, but as you know, I don't feel called to the active life.
They have a good prayer life, live in common, wear a (barely) modified habit. . .habit is still 3/4 length. They have had a healthy novitiate (meaning there were several in it). And they all have a love for the sick and suffering. They operate hospices from their convent, especially for those who don't have the money for end of life care. There are mainly older patients but ever so often I'd see someone younger.
Mother Edward was the novice mistress when I was discerning. She's now the Superior, obviously. She is a nice woman.
I think, if I felt called to the active life, to resume my nursing skills, (since I will be ceasing being a formal nurse, when I quit my job in a week after I return from my vacation!), I think I would start there.
I'd love to hear if anyone is discerning there!

What wonderful sisters indeed! I am not discerning with them (though our God is full of surprises!), but know of their cancer home in Atlanta. They have done so much work for the sick and the poor among us.
For the intentions of the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, for those women discerning with them, for the sick and impoverished to whom them minister, and for the family and friends that support them.... Our Father....

Praised be Jesus!
These Sisters are sooo beautiful!
I wrote the Vocation Director and told her I would from now on, include her Sisters and patients in my prayers. What a beautiful apostolate!
I totally had to share!

Awwww, that's sweet! Are you considering them as a community for discernment?
Not all of the sisters are nurses, from what I've been told, so that isn't a requirement.

ohh they are so beautiful. That is just so wonderful that they don't charge anything. How do they pay for the things required (besides God's Divine Providence of course

)
God Bless,

I've had a couple PMs from ppl telling me they love my icon, heh! It's quite popular.

PS. your sig reminds me of a JPII quote I've always loved " Stupidity is also a gift of God, but one mustn't misuse it." But that's also off topic

I don't know, they must have someone donating! Well, I wouldn't hesitate to donate, even though I am always broke. Someone always needs it more than I do!
They are just such a beautiful community!

No unfortunately not.
I don't want to visit too many communities, unless they are Franciscan.
Unless somehow God wills it.

I think they accept various donations but don't require money to treat a patient. Not sure, I could be talking out of turn. . . .

FYI
The Dominican sisters of Hawthrone will be on Fr. Mitch Pacwa's show on Wed 8th. I think the sisters are Sr. Mary DePaul and Sr. Alma Marie.
