Hello to everyone!

Have you guys heard of the "Teresa de Jesus" series that's going to be on EWTN? It is a great production!!! It was a made for TV movie I believe, in Spain, in 1984 consisting of 8 parts on the life of St. Teresa of Avila and the beginning of the Discalced Carmelite Order.

When I visited the Buffalo Carmel, the Mother highly recommended that I watch it. They had it taped from EWTN several years ago in the guest house. The other sisters in the Carmel liked it too. They usually have everyone who enters see the film. I didn't get to watch the whole series, but I was sooo happy to see EWTN is playing it again.

They do not play this series every year. I emailed them, EWTN, earlier this year to ask about it, and they said they play it from time to time, but do not have it available on tape. I actually found it on DVD on eBay once from Spain, but it was PAL format. I was actually considering buying an International DVD Player just to watch it, to help me discern! :j Then when I saw it was going to be on EWTN this October, I was soo happy! (And I was thinking it probably wouldn't be, since St. Teresa's feastday, October 15, falls on a Sunday this year)

Here are the times: Oct. 2 - 6 at 3AM and again at 6PM (for the first parts) ; then Oct 9 - 11 at 3AM and again at 6PM. (for the final parts)

It is about 8 hours all together, about 1 hour for each part. It is entirely in Spanish, with English subtitles, but this makes it even greater, as it is filmed in Spain and very true to St. Teresa's real life.

I hope some of you will be able to see this, especially if you are discerning a vocation to Carmel! - and also for Gemma who is a founder like St. Teresa of Avila! : )

God bless everyone!

Margaret

Hello! Praised be Jesus Christ!

I wanted to add that these times are Eastern Time. You can check for more details at www.ewtn.com under Television - Program Schedules.

It looks like the first 5 parts are called "The Way of Perfection" Then part 6 is "Discalced Visit" 7 - "Life" and 8 - "Daughter of the Church"

On a side note, I think the order here is interesting, as the Buffalo Carmelites actually recomended that I read "The Way of Perfection" first, before reading St. Teresa's other works. I think this is because she wrote this one first, and it is directed to the nuns of the order she was founding - good for someone discerning a call to her order.

Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!

Yeah! I cant wait, I recorded the majority of them last year, but I missed a few episodes, now when it comes on I can get all 8 this time around!! Just re-record over them, there was a Saint Therese Little Flower documentry on today that I recorded. I LOVE lust.gif it when they do these kinds of films and movies. My other favorite is on Saint Faustina that was showed not that long ago. drool.gif

Yeah, lol today I walked into my room cause I am recording it to get change since I also have a sci-fi show that comes on at the same time Theresa does, and I really walked in on the wrong part. HAHAH. I was hysterical!! As to what was happening in the movie, I was like, "WHAT! Impossible...HOW many times has this happened now!!! Greattttt...." It was funny. lol_roll.gif

Since it contains a spoiler I cant really tell you what happened. Hahaha. blush.gif blush.gif But it was great.

So is there really no way to get this on DVD or VHS? I don't get EWTN at home, and I'm not home at 6pm to see it online (and if I'm still up at 3am I'm itching to get to bed).

Yes, this series was shown before a few years back. The Daughters of St. Paul sold the videos. Along with the videos for St. Teresa of the Andes.

At the time of the first showing, Canada wouldn't allow EWTN in so a friend had the tapes. I wanted to by the tapes but I found the $100+ alittle too pricey for me a poor student. Now I am just poor P.gif

When this was on, I would go to another room on break at work & watch as much as possible...(my co-workers would not appreciate a movie in Spanish about a bunch of nuns!) I think the woman who plays St. Teresa is a marvelous actress... blush.gif

Ah! Did anyone who is taping this series, catch that the one airing today began at 5:30 Eastern time, instead of 6 PM? I just turned it on to start taping, and realized it began a half hour earlier. Is anyone else taping this that would be willing to send a copy of the third part? Thanks!

Margaret

Yes, the one who plays Teresa did an excellent job at portraying her - so the Reverend Mother at the Buffalo Carmel said. She even looks a lot like some of the paintings of her, with a serious determined face.

My father really loves St. Teresa of Avila also. He saw part of this film from the Buffalo Carmelites, but this time I planned on taping the whole thing and giving it to him for Christmas - but unfortunately I did not get the first half hour of the 3rd part - this is when she was pierced in the heart by the angel. Oh, well.

I think the next 5 chapters start at 6 PM Eastern time.
cmariadiaz
Aw. I just checked the Daughters of St. Paul website and I couldn't find the video. So if anyone finds a online store that has it let me (and the Phamily) know.

Ah.. that's exactly what happened to me. It began at 4:30. All because St. Francis .... j j/k We love St. Francis - just wanted to get all of Teresa.

We'll have to come up with some way to get all the Episodes. Maybe EWTN will be willing to air it again just for us! .. or maybe not ...

I wanted to watch the St. Francis of Assisi thing, but I forgot to set my alarm so I'd wake up at 3 am. I'm gonna cry. weep.gif I didn't go to Mass today either. sadder.gif

Okay, EWTN emailed me back, and said they can only play this series about once a year for that very reason - that's it's difficult to fit it into their schedule with times that will work for everyone.

No problem - that's great they're airing it anyway.

But I just realized .. I MIGHT have episode 3 taped when I was trying to copy it from the Buffalo Carmel's copy - however, it is pretty scribbly <---if that's a word :j
brendan1104
NO ONE sells it in the U.S./Canada- along with the ones on St. Teresa of the Andes. I tape them at 3 AM so I was safe, and I'll send you a copy.

On ewtn.com it says it was supposed to be on this morning - 3:00 AM to 4 AM Eastern time (2 AM- Central Time, 1 AM Mountain Time, 12 AM Pacific Time). Oh dear, it wasn't on ?? I'm planning to get a copy from brendan, who's taping them at the early morning hour. hhhmmmm

Yes, it should be on tonight at 6 PM Eastern Time. Then tomorrow will be the last one. If I'm able to get all the episodes, I'd be willing to copy them for others too.

If not, if we are all really determined to have all the episodes, I think we'll all have to plan on getting International DVD players for the long run, which run at about $100 - $150. But I don't think I'll be thinking of that, at least not for now. It's neat to have all these episodes in our catholic video libraries however - especially so others can see them.

But either way, as St. Teresa said on her bookmark " ... All things are passing. He who lacks God, lacks nothing. God alone suffices." :j
onlygrace08
Yeah!!! It's recording.... no worries smile.gif It just didn't record this morning because my TV didn't turn it to the right channel.

Thank you Margaret Clare for letting us know about this wonderful series!

Did anyone record at 6PM on Monday and not at 3AM?
We didn't get episode #6 because it didn't air that morning! Unfortunately, I didn't find out until 7:30 that night when I checked the tape!

Dear Sister, I believe that I still have that episode on TiVo. If I do, I could burn you a DVD copy. Just let me know...

Does anyone have last Thursday and Friday's episodes? They were deleted before I could watch them. sad.gif

Also, is this series based on a particular book? Or could someone suggest a good biography of Santa Teresa? I don't know much about her and this miniseries has piqued my interest. Thanks!

God bless you for your kindness. Brendan is sending a copy.
TiVo? I don't think I want to ask....a sure sign I've been in the monastery for awhile!

Marcelle Auclair's book is especially good. The movie seems to be following along the lines of this book but I don't know if that's just a coincidence.

MC,

Sr. Teresa of Jesus that aired on EWTN last Oct. was made in 1989. Sr. Teresa was played by actress Paulina Urrutia. She was quite good. This was the movie I tried to get a copy of. I havn't seen the one you referenced above. Was it good? was it dubbed or subtitled?

Actually, the one with Paulina Urrutia, 1989, was the series on St. Teresa de Jesus de los Andes - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379666/

But the one about St. Teresa of Avila is Teresa de Jesus, starring Concha Velasco, 1984 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088246/

I watched it last year in October, only missed taping an episode, because it was a 1/2 hr off from the scheduled time.

I've heard of another shorter one with Aurora Bautista, another Spanish actress, called also Teresa de Jesus, but have never seen this one.

Maybe they played both the series of Teresa de Jesus, and Teresa de los Andes, in the same month. I've heard the one on St. Teresa de los Andes was very good too, and long like the Teresa of Avila one. The Buffalo Carmelites recommended watching this one too actually, but I never got a chance to see it. I do remember they had this one also in their guest quarters.

But yeah, the one about St. Teresa of Avila is the one starring Concha Velasco, made in 1984. It was filmed in Spain, and when EWTN plays it, it has English subtitles. I believe the PAL DVD on eBay also has the option for subtitles in different languages.

If you haven't seen this one, it's great! I actually haven't seen the whole thing straight through myself. Just the first few parts and a couple at the end. Thanks for reminding me about the one about St. Teresa de Jesus de los Andes too, though. I would love to have that one on tape also!

Thanks MC, I got the two teresa's mixed up. I also would love to see them both.

Just posting the link here to the other thread with the new times this is playing - Teresa of Jesus on EWTN.

I bought this from eBay from Spain (search "Teresa de Jesus" concha) and it worked in my dvd player and Mac. Here it is available on Amazon - Teresa de Jesus.

The 2 that wrote reviews here are also Americans and didn't seem to have a problem playing them, even though they're PAL format! Awesome!!

Teresa de Jesus on DVD is available at this UK Carmelite bookstore (same one that has the book, Carmel in the US, 1790-1990) They ship international. This worked in our American DVD player (Samsung) as well as our Mac. It is PAL format, but region 0 (which is all regions).

Just to let you guys know, another one of my friends bought this DVD from amazon and it worked in her US DVD player! :D I'm giving it to my dad for his upcoming birthday! =)

Yeah!! It's so great! It's not in American DVD format, and for a while it was available on eBay as this. But I wasn't sure if I should try buying it or not. Then all of a sudden it was available a few months ago on Amazon used items, and then on that UK Carmelite bookstore - in this PAL format - but it seems to work in most US DVD Players, as it's region 0. So far I've only heard that it doesn't seem to work in Sony US DVD players. But it's always guaranteed to work in a Mac! happy.gif
