My college group recentally found a woman's vocation retreat at a monestary in (I think) Illinois. I have been trying to find a retreat to go on lately but when I think of a vocation retreat at a monestary, my mind begins to wander thinking that the focus will be on the vocation to the monastic life. The thing is I strongly believe that I'm called to the married life. I really want to go with out group and I have till December to decide, but would it still be benificial for me to go?

Even if you are called to married life, it always beneficial to go on retreat, as it were, to help you grow in the interior life. For your vocation is holiness. ..married life? While that may be your 'official' vocation, it's truly your 'subvocation' as holiness is first and foremost, you know? I'd say, go! It won't be wasted time!

God bless you

I don't think it will hurt ... I think if anything if you are called to be married it would just solidify the vocation.

I'm married and I went on a retreat at a monastery where some nuns are. I stayed on their grounds in a cabin. While I did not directly interact with them, I was allowed to share in their prayer and Mass on the public side of the chapel. It was wonderful. So even if you do not feel called, these kind of retreats can be a gift to you.

I am really deeply considering going and my girlfriend who would be heading up the trip needs to get more info from a seminarian friend of ours who works with the sisters. It's a long strange chain but we'll hopefully get there. Thanks for setting me straight. And when I find out who the sisters are and where they're located I'll let you know.

This is something I've slowly come to realize and I'm so glad you've confirmed it for me! Thank you!

Once, a priest told me that he thought we should all visit a monastery before we commit ourselves to any vocation. If we are called to the religious life, then the benefits of going would be pretty obvious but, if we are called to the married life, it could be a good thing to know what nuns do all day! smile.gif If you were to have a daughter who possibly felt called to the religious life, you would be better prepared to answer her questions. And, of course, it could be a great oppurtunity to pray and completely discern your vocation.
