To tell you the truth, she didn't do anything to the roots while the grey was growing out. She kept saying during that whole year (and probably the year I was at OLAM, too) that she couldn't wait for the grey to be grown out more. She now has grey hair and her natural color, but the roots are the same color as the ends now... to me it really looks beautiful! She started growing it out in reparation for the sins of the world, and it was very difficult for her (she has a LOT of VERY beautiful hair... everyone compliments her hair). It was hard for her but I think she's really glad she did it because now she doesn't have to worry about having it dyed anymore. With so much hair, it was a big hassle for her to dye it (and when she had it dyed at home, it was yours truly doing it! Sometimes highlighting it too!) lol, we had fun, but we're both glad she let it "go grey" happy.gif

I'm hoping that it won't look too horrid as it grows out. . . unsure.gif But I'm so tired of dyeing it. . .. Here's to hoping that I don't chicken out! cheers.gif

How can you tell the difference between a brother and a father when they're both in their habit?

YOU CAN'T! I just guess and risk looking stupid either way.

oo a male question,
well that depends on the Community, up here, no one wheres habits, clerics rarely except for the local Benedictine monks on their property..so you cant tell who is what of anyone..BUT

Benedictines, many, will not receive the leather Belt, until professed, or they will have a much shorter scapular as a Novice.. a
lso in monastic Choir, novice , professed and solemn professed would have different types of Capes, Cowls .
Franciscans, some, will have the sort of scapular thing, loose, then sown down later, at profession..
in general, i find no matter what mens Community most have a belt or scapular diffrence..thats how one tells...
yet some Communities, like the Brothers of Bethlehem,& the Assumption and St Bruno, their is no telling...
some 'traditional' Franciscans, shave their heads on profession
its all as you see , particular to a Congregations traditions and customary...

yet! in my former Community in France there was no significant difference in looks between Novice and professed, Clergy or Brother..so just eeveryone was Brother..period.

in the Mercy of Christ Jesus, Emile-James,

in the Eastern Church (Orthodox-Byz- cath ) it relates to their hats.. and cowls, but though they dont have what we would call Novices per se...smile.gif

most of the time i've found you can tell in the scapulars that they wear. if not, just ask! lol.gif

edit to say: I just realized that today's Oprah show was the one mentioned earlier in this thread. I was thinking of a completely different episode. But I caught a few minutes of today's.. which was pretty interesting.
puellapaschalis
At my favourite Benedictine House they wear a cloth band round the tunic rather than a belt. A postulant wears a black cassock, and receives the habit at investiture as normal. However, in choir a novice doesn't wear the monastic cowl (great big black flowing thing that can look quite intimidating in a quantity of a dozen or so at twenty to six in the morning in a dark, dark abbey church...ok, enough of my weird teenage experiences), which is given at first profession.

But then Benedictines are notorious for taking the word "autonomous" and running with it wacko.gif D.gif One of the houses in the EBC has a different way of fastening the hood at the neck - just to be different from the rest, I suspect detective.gif

Trying desperately to prevent this post from being totally offtopic.gif ... Buckfast dropped the tonsure after WW2 (I think), and now the monks take it in turns to be (play?) barber every few weeks or something. Playing the game of "guess who's been cutting hair today" whilst the community are processing out of Vespers is muchly amusing. It can be quite hit and miss sometimes.

Love and prayers,

PP

Yes, I have heard similar stories. There is no guarantee your hair is donated. Ironoically... there is an Oprah commercial on the tv right now where women get their hair cut and donated. (Freaky!)

I did, however, find this site for Beautiful Lengths. It might be an alternative....

Lauren, that is a beautiful tradition at OLAM and might I ask, what do they do with it after the investment? saint.gif

QUOTE(Totus Tuus @ Jan 4 2007, 10:02 AM)

I like what St. Therese did with hers blush.gif They arranged it in a frame with flowers. At OLAM, the hair that gets cut is placed on a silver tray and put on the altar for the day of the sisters Investment- to symbolize that it is a gift to Our Lord.

That really made me laugh, how often do you go there?

I flat-ironed my hair today and put it in a pigtial. I really want to go it out long enough to briad.
Incarnate Word Postulant
In our archives we have a few samples of what the Sisters did with the hair from their investment ceremony. There's a framed "hair bouquet" and I mean it literally. The Sisters would twist the hair and make it look like flowers, sometimes adding little flowers or beads. When I get a chance I'll try to take a picture from our archives
cmariadiaz
When I was growing my hair out, I'd get a cut once every 2-3 months, to keep it in shape.

That worked. I got it to a bit below shoulder length in about 5 years. My hair is curly so a straight bob won't work well -- so because its layered it does take a bit to grow out.

But now that I'm back to short hair -- it is a blessing. I get a cut every 4 weeks, and its much more manageable.

But ... I had a bad hair day on the 23rd of December. The hair stylist (my normal one) really didn't do a good job. It looks pretty bad -- one of the priest in the community I've been visiting has actually made a comment like "what's up with your hair", to which I responded "its a really bad cut".

Oh well, maybe by another 2 weeks it'll be long enough to try to do something to correct it.

So I'll live with it for now ... I may start to look into using gel to try to get the stuff that sticks up to kind of stay in place.

AAAAAAAMEN to that!! haha smile.gif

last nite, i was in the Crypt of the Cathedral for our youth ministry and the girl next to me leaned over and goes,
"hey, i just realized that if your hair caught on fire, no one would notice!"
later in the evening i flipped my head down into my lap and my hair went too...almost into the candle. everyone screamed, "YOUR HAIR!" wacko.gif

a few weeks ago, this was a conversation between me and a priest (Padre Paulo from the Padre Paulo fanclub on the lame board):
Fr. Paul: You should grow your hair out really long for like five years.
me: Why?
Fr. Paul: Cos then it'd be really big and it coudl be cast in a Hebrew play as the Burning Bush!

Hey anyone wear a vail to Mass? or even anytime or all the time.
and of course we know Sisters wear vails smile.gif

I want to start wearing one, but I know where I go except for St.Joe's no one wears one. I have a white triangle one that covers my head.

What color and how big? idontknow.gif

I wear a mantilla, yes! The women in my family all share veils... we have a lot of different colors. I got some in Spain that were silver and yellow (respectively). But generally black and white are the most common colors. It doesn't matter what color you wear. Some people like to observe the tradition of wearing a white veil if they are unmarried and a black one if they are, but I don't really know anyone who does that anymore.

Go for it! Even if you're the only one, you could start a wonderful trend. In case of confrontation, make sure you can explain why you're wearing it; I like to tell people who ask me that it is a good way to imitate Our Lady.

Best wishes happy.gif

Lauren
hugheyforlife
I wear a white one because I am not married. (now you know someone, Lauren!) It is long (about midway down my back). I needed it long to cover my hair - and I liked the long ones better anyway.

I tend not to wear mine at my home parish for a couple of reasons. But I wear it in adoration and at other churches. smile.gif

I've read the book as well. I wish there were more pictures. But it was an interesting read.

I do not wear a mantilla. Perhaps one reason I do not, is I do not have a parish community. I have a work-church community, and I work at two additional parishes, and sometimes attend mass at a third parish. And if I wore a veil, I would want my decision to be respected by the larger community and respectful of that community (and most importantly motivated by my respect for Jesus). smile.gif
