I wonder if that was an accident? doh.gif
VeniteAdoremus
I had my hair short for about a year when I was 14. My mum loved it so much, she still asks me to cut it off again! But I won't, since people seem to have enough trouble with determining my gender as it is.

I wonder how she'd react if I ever told her my hair would have to come off again, and why smile.gif

more shaved heads nuns and veils!:)
"Passionist nuns live some of the most austere religious lives: They shave their heads; get up at 2 a.m. every day to pray; whip themselves with small leather lashes to share in the pain of Christ’s flogging; practice long-term fasting, give up foods such as fruit and vegetables during the summer as penance, and only speak one hour a day. Their suffering, they believe, can help save lost souls."
IPB Image

"Although their faces seem pale and gaunt, their eyes tired with black circles, these women laugh and tell jokes and poke fun at slow-praying sisters or sisters who fall asleep during their vigils"

"Sister Marie Michelle is tall with sparkling blue eyes. If she had hair, it would be thick and black. Even without makeup and after years of less than five hours of sleep a night, her face beams a wide smile. But she is quite serious when she says she made the decision to become a nun at the age of four.

The story goes that little Marie stood on a kneeler while her mother prayed beside her. In front of them sat a nun. “I leaned over the pew and I grabbed the bottom of her veil and I picked it up to see what was underneath it. And my mom grabbed my hand and was mortified and she said: ‘Don’t touch the nun! She’s married to Jesus.’ That was it for me!.”

Where did you get this information, if you don't mind my asking? Which Passionist community is this? The Passionists still practice the discipline? I didn't realize they still did this. . .although I knew they did at one time.

My guess was that it's in St. Louis. I've been to visit them before and the grill looks familiar. And here's more from the Archdiocese's vocations website.

Glory to Jesus Christ
no problem, i should of said who they were at the beggining

Passionists Nuns
The foundation of Passionist Nuns in the Archdiocese of St. Louis dates from February 1948. Cloistered contemplatives dedicated to the Passion of Jesus Christ, the nuns lead lives of prayer, silence and sacrifice centred on the Mass, the Divine Office, intercession for the Church and all mankind, and the preparation of altar breads for numerous parishes.

For more information about the Passionist Nuns, write Mother Superior;
Passionist Nuns Monastery;

while NOT all passionist Monasteries do , this Community does practice the "discipline", after Matins, in the cloister exit hall, lights out, in community, leather straps on bear skin, BUT not to break the skin...just as the Missionaries of Charity, Carmelites in Pau, etc, still do today. offering their sufferings primarily for release of souls in Purgatory.

Thanks for sharing this. That was one thing that impressed me about St Louis...they had a TON of religious there! (I was a travel nurse there back in 2002.) That's impressive that they still use the discipline. Kudos to them!

Just out of curiousity, has anyone here done Locks for Love? I was thinking about doing it, but I went to schedule an appointment to get my hair cut and the stylist said my hair would be really short because they have to cut off ten inches. I decided to wait a bit so that it grows longer before I do that. My question is do they take hair with split ends? If they don't, I might as well get it cut now (keeping it longish).
HisChild
I haven't because I was told they won't do dyed hair either.

I'm sure they'd appreciate it without the split ends. Exactly why I didn't wait any longer. And really.. try not to wait too long! I waited and waited and mine was so damaged that it got cut really short. Yes, it's still several inches past my shoulders but compared to what it was... it's SHORT.
TrueImage
I've never dyed/permed my hair so that's not an issue for me...it's just the fact it hasn't been cut in ages.

of course..one could become a Buddhist nun, and just get it over with.no need to worry about a veil slipping either!:)

ahh it will grow back and you'll have a beautiful gift to give to our lord when you enter religious life, my hair is very long now, I have been growing it for about 2 years now and I will get it cut before I enter my community (they have us cut our hair at entrance) and I will be donating it to locks of love, actually a tradition I started way back in HS, I'd let my hair grow for about 2-3 years really long and then get it cut and donate it, and perhaps you could do the same with your hair, and next time it won't seem so sad because you'll know it's going to help someone else saint.gif

I've done Locks for Love... I cut 10" off about 5 years ago. My roommate did it. (It was the first time my hair was above my shoulders in over 12 years or something.) I'm sure there were some split ends in there. But I did receive a nice "thank you" in the mail from Locks for Love a few weeks after I mailed the hair in.

I'm thinking about doing it again, but I need to have a 2" trim. And then I'd still have about 4" to go.... so I'm a little up in the (h)air about it. lol.gif

I've heard not-so-good things about Locks of Love - although not being in the USA this is all quite second-hand information of course. It was something about them not being completely honest about how they use the hair donated to them, not being ethical in their practices, and not administering their finances in a way one might expect with a charity.

But take this with a pinch of salt! If anyone's interested I'll try and dig up the source where I read all this.

Yes, I have heard similar stories. There is no guarantee your hair is donated. Ironoically... there is an Oprah commercial on the tv right now where women get their hair cut and donated. (Freaky!)

I did, however, find this site for Beautiful Lengths. It might be an alternative....

I've seen that episode. There's a ton of people behind baracades and then they have a hair cutting station in front. And all these women are just coming up and volunteering to lop off their hair...

Ok, I did some memory-racking. It comes from a community on LJ, hence the useage of the word "evil" that is somewhat looser than we are accustomed to:
QUOTE
Locks of Love. An evil company who has great success convincing otherwise good-meaning people to donate their hair. In truth, they sometimes don’t pick up the hair that’s donated at all, let people think they make wigs for kids with cancer in general when they do not, make very few wigs at all, sell most donations they do pick up for cash, and only recently started opening their books to the Better Business Bureau. Don’t make the mistake of posting that you’re donating your beautiful long hair to LoL to help out some needy child unless you’re prepared to get an earful of how you’ve been tricked.

Further, people are pointed to that community's memories section and the relevant Wikipedia article.

However, please bear in mind that the memories I'm talking about (and the discussions got pretty fervent that I recall) were at least two years old, so it's very possible that the situation has changed since then. It goes without saying that whilst LJ and Wikipedia have their advantages, they're not guaranteed to be impartial and totally correct in what's said on there.

Love and prayers,

PP

ETA: I've just spotted shortnun's post; apologies for the duplication.
HisChild
A coworker donated to LoL, and said she was paranoid after hearing similar stories. When she called them, she said she had well over a foot of healthy hair she would donate IF they'd talk to her about where the hair was going FIRST. Someone finally told her that unless she was cutting off her hair FOR someone in particular, they couldn't guarantee if or when her hair would be made into a wig. She asked if they sold hair. . ..they only said 'rarely'. Whatever that means. They also said it had to be 'pure' hair, without chemical perms, or dyes. (which is how I know I would be out of the loop, since I have dyed my grey over the past several years.) This is recall, mind you, from last year. Anyone serious about donating there, I could call her and ask, as we no longer work together ( I still have her home #).

God bless!

Oh, Lauren. . .this was from an earlier post, but I didn't get a response. . .wasn't sure if you saw it. . .when your mom was growing out her grey. ..any tips for how she did it, to avoid the whole grey on top, color on bottom look? Or other suggestions?
VeniteAdoremus
Thank you, HisChild, that was very informative! I have highlights in my hair, so I can't donate it. Which really is a pity since my hair grows very fast and is of donatable quality, I think...

My mum dyed the roots of her hair with non-permanent dye when she was growing it out. But now that she's moved to France it bleaches so much from the sun that she's a blonde again smile.gif
puellapaschalis
Should I, Deo volente, get to my investiture, I'm half considering suggesting that it simply go on the monastery's compost heap. It might as well help grow the veggies.

Love and prayers,

PP

Apart from that it doesn't decompose... at least, not in less than 30 years or so smile.gif

To tell you the truth, she didn't do anything to the roots while the grey was growing out. She kept saying during that whole year (and probably the year I was at OLAM, too) that she couldn't wait for the grey to be grown out more. She now has grey hair and her natural color, but the roots are the same color as the ends now... to me it really looks beautiful! She started growing it out in reparation for the sins of the world, and it was very difficult for her (she has a LOT of VERY beautiful hair... everyone compliments her hair). It was hard for her but I think she's really glad she did it because now she doesn't have to worry about having it dyed anymore. With so much hair, it was a big hassle for her to dye it (and when she had it dyed at home, it was yours truly doing it! Sometimes highlighting it too!) lol, we had fun, but we're both glad she let it "go grey" happy.gif

My opinion of my hair is not the point here smile.gif Anyway, I did some googling and a whole bunch of sites told me that human hair is good to put on the composting heap. So it takes 30 years? Nothing in the big scheme of things cool.gif

Love and prayers,

PS This is all assuming the monastery even has a composting heap, of course.

I like what St. Therese did with hers blush.gif They arranged it in a frame with flowers. At OLAM, the hair that gets cut is placed on a silver tray and put on the altar for the day of the sisters Investment- to symbolize that it is a gift to Our Lord.

Seriously! ohmy.gif We were looking at a book during my visit in NY and saw the picture of it. They way it's edited in this book though is just perfect for seeing it really well. It's her hair against a white background and the page is quite large. It's like large children's book size so it's not quite as tiny as it is on here.

If you get time to spend in the library at the novitiate, you might look at it. I think it's sitting on the little table in front of the cases. (Sr. Miriam could point it out for you if she's around.)
