What is the REAL role of a vocations director? Is he suppose to stay in constant contact with someone thinking about the seminary or is he suppose to wait until the person discerning contacts him? The vocations director in my archdiocese is not good. I've been around him before (actually at a discernment retreat) and all he talked about was football and sports. I haven't heard from him since sometime last year. I get no mailings from the vocations office at all. Another question, isn't a bishop of the diocese suppose to be in contact with those discerning too? I feel like you have to go through the Vocations Director than through some "commitee" even before you are accepted as a seminarian (if you plan to apply). Plus, the vocations director wants you go follow a checklist before you apply to the seminarian. It seems like a maze or something and its starting to get on my nerves. I know bishops (Bp. Robert Carlson for example) who is his own vocations director and is very interested in vocations. I don't know if anyone else has had problems with vocation directors in their areas?
