Full Version: The Apostles Of Jesus Christ, Priest And Victim

Last week in the bulletin of St. John Vianney Parish in Northlake, IL, there was an article on a new society of priests forming, The Apostles of Jesus Christ, Priest and Victim. There are only 3 priests so far, but I just thought I would share this here in Vocation Station. One of the priests I know of, Fr. Eduardo Garcia, who has been at the parish for many years, and is known for being very traditional and orthodox.

St. John Vianney Parish may be one of the most liberal churches in architecture in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and yet one of the most traditional in spirit! Fr. Fanelli, who was pastor for something like 20 years (reassigned to St. Thomas More in 2005, an Indult Latin Mass parish), radically changed St. John Vianney to quite a traditional place! Many statues were taken from various other parishes getting rid of them, and kneelers were put in for the reception of Holy Communion. I believe they have a Tridentine Mass something like once a month. They are also the first parish in the Archdiocese to have a perpetual adoration chapel!

Here is St. John Vianney Parish's website: http://sjvianney.faithweb.com/ (note: it needs updating, eg new pastor since 2005 is Fr. Refermat)

Here is a scan in of the article in their bulletin. This reminds me of what was done at St. John Cantius Parish in the city - how a priestly society was formed there. If it's God's will, maybe this new society will be something like the priestly society there. I'm not sure whether they plan to stay at SJV, but they are starting there now.

Text of the article:

QUOTE
There is a new society of priests being formed. They are called, The Apostles of Jesus Christ, Priest and Victim. The cardinal has agreed to allow this group to form and to see how it works out. Because I knew this could insure good and hold priests at St. John Vianney for the future, I agreed to host the society. Right now, the society consists of Fr. Eduardo Garcia, Fr. Dwight Campbell, and Fr. Ben Reese. Some of these priests you already know, and some you probably have never seen. It is their hope that the society will grow, but right now we are able to house them. While here, they will be doing pastoral work at St. John Vianney.

Fr. Dwight Campbell, from the Peoria diocese will be joining us in May. He is finishing his doctorate in Mariology from the International Mario logical Institute at the University of Dayton. He is writing his dissertation on a history of the Two Hearts (of Jesus and Mary). We welcome him!

In addition, Fr. Ben Reese, also from the diocese of Peoria, who celebrated a few Masses here over the past year, will also be joining us. Fr. Reese will be replacing Fr. Mathias as our in-residence priest. Fr. Ben will be in-residence for the next year, as he works on his doctorate at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. I'm sure he will get involved a little in the parish, although his primary task is to try to finish writing his dissertation. He should be joining us in June.

Ah, yes. Fr Garcia used to be the chaplain at the Handmaids of the Precious Blood near my house. Very good priest. I am not comfortable with so much Tridentine Mass, but I fully support people's right to enjoy it (if the holy father allows!).

What is the purpose of this society? Are they a spin off of the SSJC (Society of St John Cantius)? What makes them different?

Margaret Clare
Hi! Yeah, Fr. Garcia is a great priest! priest.gif I've heard he has a great sense of humor too. hehe.gif I didn't know he was a chaplain there, with the Handmaids. I've never been out there myself. That's neat.

I'm not sure if they're planning something as big as the Society of St. John Cantius, or want to offer the Tridentine Mass or anything. But I was just thinking of the similarity of starting a priestly society at a parish as was done at SJC.

If I hear anything new, I'll be sure to post. happy.gif

Every Sunday, 10 am in the basement chapel

A related article, Catholic New World - Greater use of Tridentine Mass may ‘promote unity’

Also, a new community of sisters is coming to the SJV parish convent, but I am not sure which congregation/order.

I love this parish, especially their adoration chapel (despite the terrible architecture)

smile.gif We make a run for the money sometimes at our university chapel--it will probably be even more notable this semester as we're starting occasional TLMs.

*looks at picture... Well, they are ahead of us in that!, except that they have a lace altar cloth.
