A friend of mine is really interested in the Community of St John Sisters. Does anyone know anything about them? Any pictures? What their apostolic sisters do? Where they are located? Anything that you know would be helpful... esp if any of you have visited them!

thank you!

I hope your friend loves studying Philosophy!
ther are 316 Sisters(Contemplative) ,and around 100 Novices ..in 26 Houses.
-------------

The Community of the Sisters of Saint John, established as a religious Institute of Diocesan Right by the Archbishop of Lyon on March 25, 1994, was founded by Father Marie-Dominique Philippe on December 8, 1982, seven years after the Brothers of Saint-John, in view of a contemplative life. The sisters live their total consecration to God in silence and solitude(meals eaten i the Cell), as well as through fraternal charity.
-
Prayer is at the heart of the life of the contemplative sisters. Community prayer (time of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and the Divine Office) and solitary prayer mark the rhythm of their day. The Eucharist is the source and the summit of their whole life (Lumen Gentium, 11). The sisters always strive to live the Eucharist with increasing intensity and fervor.

Cardinal Francis E. George, OMI.

Archbishop of Chicago

"I am very grateful that the community of St. John [has established]two Novitiates in Illinois, close to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Founded by Fr. Marie-Dominique Philippe, O.P., whose teaching amd writing is a great gift to all those searching for the truth and desiring to contemplate God's self-revelation, the Community of St. John is an inspired response to the needs of our time and place. Their presence will do much to strengthen our faith. I will keep their building projects in my prayers, and I hope that many Catholics and others will be generous to them."

I hope your friend loves studying Philosophy!

From what I've heard of them they aren't much like Dominican Nuns at all. More Carmelites that study philosophy!
(Study is only one aspect of Dominican life. We are much more communal, have enclosure and are professed to one particular monastery. We are rooted in the monastic tradtion with an apostolic thrust.)

But then again, you didn't ask about dominicans. You asked about the Community of St. John!
Ali went recently to visit. PM her and she'll tell you everything you want to know, I'm sure!

Yeah Ali is sending me information for her.

Does anyone know about their apostolic sisters? Are there any of them in the US or any of them planning to come to the US? Are they open to accepting women from the US?

The whole philosophy thing: definitely not my cup of tea. I started life loving philosophy, but now I'm kind of sick of it.... unsure.gif still glad I am going Salesian cool.gif

Thanks everyone for the information!

I visited there last year in June. :j Actually I met a young women discerning there that was with me in the Buffalo Carmel a few years back! It was a happy reunion. lol.gif

A couple of my friends are becoming Oblates there (like 3rd order).

Here are some photos from investitures of some sisters last year. (I had another thread with them but can't find it) - but here are the photos - http://pjstar.mycapture.com/mycapture/fold...sp?event=190277

They are beautiful pictures!! The sisters there are wonderful - the spirituality is very deep! I think my favorite thing about them is that they have Holy Mass at noon instead of right away in the morning. They are "cousins" of the Monastic Family of Bethlehem, as their founder. Fr. Philippe, OP helped Sr. Marie (former contemplative Dominican, foundress of Bethlehem) and they have many little similarities, but are definitely different.

Ah, that explains some of the similarities which I have noticed. That is really cool. smile.gif

Their growth is phenomenal -they are only 25 years old and they have how many?!

Another thing interesting about the Sisters of St. John is that while the Apostolic Sisters wear a grey veil after profession, (& also the novices I think wear a simple grey veil), the Contemplative Srs keep the white veil after temporary and final profession - that looks much like a Carmelite novice veil. The novices wear a simple white veil w/o the wimple. One of the sisters there told me they do this because Fr. Philippe said they are always novices of the Holy Spirit. :j

The active sisters are coming to our diocese this summer. Our archbishop was bishop of Peoria and invited the community of St. John to come and now they have a small presence here. We've not met them yet (but met other CoSJ brothers).

i love the brothers of St.Jean so much! They are awesome. Esp, the stuff they do with the youth. And the sisters are amazing. During Eagle Eye last summer there were apostolic sisters who came to the US to help the whole summer and they were really awesome. I hope that they do start a branch here in the US because i think theat their presence would be great.

But yeah, Bro. Nathan, Bro John Luke, and Bro Peter Francis are all awesome, as is Fr. Antoine.

Actually, I believe it's more commonly called just Derry, as it always was. That's how I remember it when I was over there.

Whether it's called Derry or Londonderry depends on which side of the fence you sit on.
He is Risen!
Some of the Sisters of St. John came over for supper one night when I was on a visit to the CFR sisters in NYC. They were all native French speakers and were very bright and joyful. I wish they could have stayed and talked for longer, definately check them out.

Yep. I originally wrote Londonderry last year without thinking, which is what my friend who is close to the community in IL emailed it to me as. But then I realized it would be referred to by most Catholics (in Ireland), or maybe that's the wrong word to use, Republicans, as just Derry. On the Community of St. John's site their address is Derry.

Here's something I just found ..

Aren't there some of the Contemplative sisters around Chicago? I spoke to some at the Congress (the one we 'know' from Montreal introduced us), and then I spoke for some time Sunday morning with a postulant named Theresa.
