Socrates is a good guy. Don't see him round the lameboard crue much... what do you think of his style?
Nadezhda
Jun 29 2007, 02:07 PM
He writes what he thinks is correct. It might be a little harsh on occasion, but he's exercising his 1st Amendment right. You (in general, not you specifically) don't always to have to agree with him, but you'd better be well prepared.
Sacred Music Man
Jun 29 2007, 02:25 PM
Agreed. I'm not usually on his opposing side but... wait... I don't ever remember being on the opposing side of Socrates... anywho, he's always logical about things. Like I say, I'm there learning how to spar, and I usually put in a few posts. Other than that, I'm not that smart about dealing with some ultra fundies and such. But wewt for those who strike terror in the hearts of liberals

Socrates is a very intelligent man. You didn't hear it from me, but he graduated Summa Cum Laude (he was 3 classes ahead of me in college). He might seem blunt to the extreme, maybe lacking that "gentle touch" that many people seem to need when they are reading controversial topics... but more often than not he is correct. I rarely am in complete disagreement with him, at least on the important matters...

The debates have been slow as of late... now that the Muslim debates featuring Reza are gone. They've been good, but eventually it stalled on terms of one side calling the other "propaganda". I'm not pointing fingers. I enjoyed following that thread though. Both sides gave some interesting stuff.

I enjoyed reading Reza's and Cathoholic's posts. They seemed to actually know what they were talking about. I'm pretty well informed about Islam, but they put me to shame. It was nice to read actual debate posts, rather than the usual "all Muslims are evil terrorists that will blow up anything they can" posts. There are a few posters that favor those kind of responses. It gets old. It starts to feel like an "I can be more pious than you" contest.

Anywho, in response to Nad, I am well informed about the general beliefs of Muslims but they both put me to shame too. Oh, Naralas? That's my good friend Dan. He helped me install Linux on my compy (I have a screensaver that has the matrix code stream down the screen

). He is a moral atheist as he claims, and he is a logical guy. He's a compy expert. Both Mac and PC. Linux is his favourite OS... anywho... he's pretty cool. Just insist being Christian, and try and keep him around. I tried pretty hard to get him to come on to PM. Many MSN convos contained "hey you should join Phatmass". Hahaha. Good times. Btw, I had to laugh at the replies made to Naralas' post. It was like the collision of worlds here... a good friend throwing down with some very intelligent Catholics. I'm sure we'll have a good laugh about this in heaven.

I tend to stay out of debates like that one. I don't have enough theological background to state my reasons coherently. I'd rather lurk than make a goof of myself. It was entertaining, although I'm not sure how dairygurl is an expert. Maybe I missed that somewhere in the past. Who knows. I liked Groo's use of Occam's Razor. It was insightful.
Sacred Music Man
Jul 3 2007, 10:17 PM
Groo made a good stand. But my understanding is that people need to find out more about Dan (Naralas) then just throwing stuff out there and being all "draw steel" on the man. Not saying Naralas is a weak guy who's sitting on the fence. On the contrary, he seems to think he's planted right on the side of Atheism. This will be a good experience for him and me because philosophically, we've been taught by a liberal catholic in school... and not so much a pure Catholic philosophical teaching... though we agree somewhat on who really missed the mark and who didn't. Dunno if he likes Aquinas though...

Though, he counts as a theologian...

I don't disagree. I think it's possible to be an ethical atheist. I try to be polite, even when I'm fired up about something. Glad you were able to get him on here. I'm not Catholic, in case you didn't know. It doesn't color my responses, but I try to be upfront about it.

The debate table isn't even fun anymore. I stopped trying to argue with people there. They only insult one another and don't take any interest in one anothers opinions. Not the way to debate in my mind.
