Full Version: One Great Movie That Promotes Vocations
phatmass phorum > Phormation > Vocation Station

There's one movie that I think does a great job of promoting vocations. It's called, "Therese" which came out a couple of years ago. This is the story of St. Therese the Little Flower. The journey she takes to her vocation to be a Carmelite Nun and living her life at the monastery is inspiring! We see her struggles and triumphs or should I say God's triumphs in her.

Feel free to suggest any other movies that help promote vocations!

ok then ill take up that challenge..
"Bernadette: Her vision became a legend."

From Jean Delannoy, one of France's foremost filmmakers, comes this top quality feature film production of the story of St. Bernadette and the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes in the year 1858. Actress Sydney Penny gives a beautiful performance as Bernadette, and the rest of the cast is equally superb. Also stars Roland Lesaffre and Michelle Simonnet. It is highly recommended by the Vatican as a "sensitive portrayal of a very moving story that deserves a wide audience." Shot on location in France with outstanding cinematography and a beautiful music score, this is the film that was chosen to be shown daily at the shrine in Lourdes. A thrilling story of spiritual conviction and the Inspirational power of faith.

"The Passion of Bernadette"
Following up the acclaimed best-selling movie, Bernadette, the story of the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous, this beautiful Jean Delannoy film tells the rest of the story of her life after the Marian visions - the life that made Bernadette a saint. The grotto at Lourdes is flourishing with many pilgrims, and Bernadette leaves to enter the convent of the Sisters of Nevers to dedicate her life to God.

"Teresa de los Andes" (1989) 250 min (5 parts)

"With the productions values of a telenovella, this 7 hour mini-series looks at the life of Juanita Fernandez Solar, who becomes Sister Teresa in a Carmelite convent in Chile in the early 20th century. Her parents are not enthused. Her sisters and brothers are not enthused. It seems the only ones who understand are some of her friends who are also considering religious life.

The mini-series goes through her life as a teenager in a well-to-do family for about the first five hours, and then the last two are spent examining her life in the convent. The portrayal shifts as she becomes more and more aware of her frustration and lack of satisfaction in the world, her joy in worshiping God and speaking of Him, and her longing to be a sister.

I heartily recommend it. It may start a bit slow, but by the end the long viewing time is well worth it. The acting is amazingly good, and the story only develops in intensity in the convent.

It has been out of print in English for years, although EWTN occasionally broadcasts it with English subtitles. It can still be obtained in the original Spanish."
is being shown on EWTN in July..

Have you actually seen the Passion of Bernadette? It's awful! It was such a disappointment after the first movie on Bernadette.

IN THIS HOUSE OF BREDE is also a great "vocation" movie and in some ways so is THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS. Why? Because it shows that normal girls, who get into trouble and seem to cause their elders tons of grey hair are called by Jesus to be His!

The girl that played Therese went to my high school years back. She has very interesting conversion story. Her mom is a teacher at the high school.

actually i enjoyed The passion of Bernadette, not as good as the first...considering its a film for story telling entertainment at first and not a documentary,an era stilllll suffering with Jansenist attitudes,, beisdes i watched it in French, while in France..and after years of study of French Church History/culture....i still enjoyed it...
though, i didnt like the American Therese film at all....and i love Little Therese..
yet i am the one who likes the "Francesco", with Micky Rourke.soooooo:P

I just remembered seeing "Completely Christ's." Religious were interviewed and the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience were discussed magnifecently!

Just thought I'd post this morning the lyrics to the beautiful theme song of this movie, Thérèse’s Canticle of Love. It was actually made a few years before the production of this film for the occasion of the visiting of the relics of St. Therese to the United States. It is based off of some of her writings/poetry.

I agree with a few others, that this wasn't the best film on St. Therese, but it was alright, especially working with a low budget. I certainly couldn't make a film like that myself!

In the lyrics here there are 2 parts sometimes, so I separated the backgroud part with italics.

Thérèse’s Canticle of Love

by
Sr. Marie Thérèse Sokol, OCD
& Sr. Michael Marie, OCD

How great and tender is our God,
who has smiled on the lowly.
Eternally my heart will sing,
a new canticle of love.

Come all who hunger, all who thirst,
all who long for fulfillment.
The God of mercy waits for you,
as a mother her child.

Oh come, to the living water,
fear not your weakness,
forever trusting in God’s merciful love.

Through the shadows of this night, Through this night,
Love will be my guiding light. Love guiding, only for today
Presence hidden from my sight, Presence hidden, only for today
‘til the clouds are put to flight. Just for today

Beneath your gaze I’ve blossomed forth,
as a rose in the sunshine.
With joyful heart I’ve given all,
to the mystery of love.

In peace, I will come before you,
with empty hands,
relying solely on Your merciful love.

Margaret Clare
Through the veil your face appears, Your face appears,
beauty shrouded, bathed in tears. Though shrouded, only for today
Bread of sinners I will share, Bread I share, only for today
rose unpetalled everywhere. Just for today

Ah, –– my God, Ah, ––
I will sing of Your love,
For this one eternal day.
For this one eternal today, For this one eternal today,
Eternal today. Eternal today.

Transformed in Love’s consuming fire, Transformed in Love’s fire,
lifted up in glory, lifted in glory,
her fragrance filling all the earth, her fragrance filling all the earth,
drawing us after her. drawing to her.

Until, in eternity we join in one chorus, Until, in eternity we join in one chorus,
forever singing of God’s merciful love. forever singing of God’s merciful love.

Canticle of love,
Song of love, Canticle of love
This eternal day, For today,
I will sing, sing of Your love. I will sing, sing of Your love.

The Cardinal isn't a true story. It's sort of based on the life of the first American cardinal, Cardinal O'Connell of Boston.
It's a good movie but the book is better.
WAAAY back in the 70's and 80's the Cardinal used to be shown regularly on TV but for some reason it's not that known anymore. Is it out on video or DVD?

If they still show it on TV, well, I wouldn't know! :-)

I really liked this movie, Mother Teresa, starring Olivia Hussey.

http://www.excerptsofinri.com/mother-teresa.html

Also of course, Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth (1977) starring her as Mary. I love this film! I grew up with it. We would often watch the parts on the Nativity and the Passion, at Christmas & Easter.
