Today is my 20th anniversary of entrance into religious life. I entered at 18, 3 weeks after high school graduation into an active community. I left after 2 years but I knew I had a vocation it was just a matter of WHERE? I entered the monastery a little over a year after I left the first community but I still consider this my anniversary of entrance into religious life despite the "hiatus".

Ever since I was a little girl I had wanted to enter on this feast day. A friend used to go to Lourdes every year and ask us if we had petitions to send. I would always write: "Dear Bl. Mother, please, I want to be a nun at 18 and enter on July 16th!"

Deo gratias, semper Deo gratias et Mariae!

Today yet another Carmelite Feast day!

The Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne

Blessed Teresa of St. Augustine and Companions (1794)

Blessed Teresa and fifteen other Carmelite nuns were guillotined during the "Reign of Terror" of the French Revolution. Two years earlier they had made an Act of Consecration by which they offered themselves as a holocaust to bring peace to the Church and the country.

When they were arrested Sister Henriette exclaimed, "Let us rejoice in the joy of the Lord, that we shall die for our Holy Religion." As each Sister ascended the guillotine, her companions sang the Veni Creator Spiritus. The normally noisy crowd was strangely silent, and a witness remarked, "They looked as if they were going to their wedding." Within ten days of their death, the Reign of Terror ended.
