Full Version: The Fish Friar And The Chip Monk
phatmass phorum > Phormation > Vocation Station
Lioness For Christ
I heard this joke quite a while ago and really wanted to draw a picture about it... hahaha.. So I finally got around to doing so--definitely could be better, but I didn't want to spend forever on it.

Here's the joke: A monastery in the English countryside has fallen on hard times, and the monks decide to open a fish-and-chips restaurant. The establishment soon became very popular, attracting people from all over.

One city fellow, thinking himself clever, asked one of the brothers standing nearby, "I suppose you're the 'fish friar?’"

"No," answered the brother, straight-faced. "I'm the 'chip monk.'"

And yes, the chip monk is Frasiscan, the friar, Domincan.. lol_roll.gif

Thanks. He's a raccoon! And uh, the chip monk didn't turn out as well as the sketch I did underneath it for some reason..

Here's a true story in the same vein:

A Baptist seminarian was having lunch at the Abbey of Gethsemani. He was really enjoying his salad, and asked one of the monks if he'd made it.

"No," said the monk. "I'm the french friar."

Blessings,
Gemma

I was a Baptist at the time, and the seminarian "brought down the house" when he told this to the congregation.

On another note, Thomas Merton did a lot of good with his writings--removed a lot of prejudice towards Catholics. He used to come into our store to get keys made for the abbey. He taught me the first part of the Hail Mary.

Fish and chips being something of a cultural institution in England, I'm pleased to see them on PhatMass. smile.gif

Unfortunately you've misrepresented the chips. We call those potato things that come in a packet crisps. Chips are more like your French fries, only they are a lot plumper.

Voila - a plate of fish and chips.

Hehe... I had thought that "chips" were more like that.. :D But I decided to do the uh, cheaty method to make it more clear... lol! Fun to hear about how it's still a norm in England though!

(anyone notice how Mrs. Beaver on Narnia movie says, "Fish and chips" and refers to fish and wood chips? hehe)
