The Carthusian monks and nuns (http://www.chartreux.org/en/frame.html) live a very radical lifestyle, and i'm looking into them a bit more. They do not have any female communities in North America, So i was wondering if anybody knew of any communities that practice the same lifestyle as they do. I will probably not be able to visit the Carthusians, due to their distance, but I'm hoping that if i go to Austria on study abroad, I may be able to see them then.

Anyway, does anybody know of any similar orders?
Gemma
The Monastic Family of Bethlehem and the Assumption of the Virgin are basically Carthusians. We've discussed them many times here on PM VS.

There is a women's monastery in Livingston Manor, NY.

Margaret Clare and EJames are both very knowledgeable about the Carthusian way. smile.gif I think Margaret has a special interest in the Livingston Manor community that Gemma mentioned. If you want any more information about it she would be the ideal person to ask.

Communities that are Carthusian proper do not generally allow visits from people unless you are seriously committed to your discernment with them. Visits to the parlour and occasional 'Come and See' retreats are not part of their way.

Hey chelsea!

Here's the Sisters of Bethlehem in Livingston Manor thread. They are great sisters! Feel free to PM me about them. This thread is actually how I found phatmass.

Every year in August they have a month long discernment retreat at one of their monasteries in France, near Geneva, Switzerland in the Alps. It is incredible!! I very highly recommend it!

God bless!
