Simple as the title states. How did you find your Spiritual Director? Or did he find you?

My parish priest was my spiritual director for a while but he has moved on.

My parish priest was reassigned. I had gone to him for confession regularily so he knew me well and knew from otehr things as well. About a year after he left, I really started looking at religious life and knew I needed help in my discernment. I prayed for the guidence of the Holy Spirit and decided I would call up for my former priest to ask if he would have the time for spiritual direction. We met a few times and discussed if this was a good fit, both of us felt like it was good fit. He's been my spiritual director now for about a year and a half.

My graduate school runs a Spiritual Direction Certificate program. I merely asked for a local list of directors and contacted them from there. My first spiritual director (before this one) was recommended by a friend of a friend.

For those interested in finding spiritual directors in their area, this is the most comprehensive (and ecumenically inclusive) list I've found: http://www.sdiworld.org/

Thanks so much for the website; I'll checking them out. I've been looking for one but no luck:(.

Anyone knows any spiritual director (s) in Orange County, California, please pass on the information to me. In addition, if she/he is far way, I don't mind doing it via phone, email, or blog, if we are a good match--well, you know what I meant. Thanking in advance.

Blessings,

Found mine by accident. I met her at a function, and we got to talking. She's on the other side of the world from me now, but we still communicate daily.

I found mine by Divine Providence. I spent months visiting various priests, but none of them clicked. I moved to a new city, my friend gave me some priests names. The last priest that I met is now my wonderful SD. Praise Jesus!

During discernment, it was important to me to have a religious woman as a spiritual director. I was more comfortable with someone who had already walked this journey. I had contacted a retreat house where I had previously attended a discernment retreat and they helped me find a director. I did not click with the first sister. She actually, referred me to someone else and we clicked right away. And even though I entered a different community, she's been with me since my whole discernment right through my initial formation and is now helping me prepare for my vows. I can't imagine any of this without her support.

The Sisters of St. Joseph have a retreat center in Orange. You can contact them:

Hm, just to seek your opinion, do you think it's a good idea or not to get a spiritual director from the community you are discerning with, or of the same spirituality you are discerning to (for example, if you feel drawn to be a Carmelite nun, you might seek a spiritual director from the Carmelite friars). Or does it not matter at all?

God bless,

I just needed a regular spiritual director (ie not one to help me discern a specific vocation or order or something)

just find a priest that you like and can relate to and can see working with and accepting what he says. Thats what I did.... I knew my priest for a few years as he was our pastor. He became my SD when he was transfered out of my parish.

For me, there were two factors that led me to finding him. First, the Student Chaplain at my high-school was off at seminary to do some more studies in theology for the second semester of my freshman year, and my sd became the assistant student chaplain. Second, in my western civilization class we had to write a few one page papers based on a primary source document, and for one of them I chose a part of The Diary of St. Faustina. I read in there that it was important for everyone to have a spiritual director, so I began looking. First my western civ. teacher (priest), but I didn't feel any real connection. Then I asked the assitant student chaplain, Fr. Paul, and we hit it off right away, and he's been my spiritual director ever since (for 4 years now). I'm going to have to find a new one when I go off to college, though, so that will be interesting.

May God bless and protect you always in all of your endeavors!

Your Brother in Christ,

I asked one of my University professors... he's wonderful, so its worked out very nicely.
