I've just returned home from visiting family in San Diego, and happened upon a Carmelite monastery of nuns, and also Prince of Peace Monastery, a men's Benedictine community. Has anyone been to either of these places, as a visitor or discerner? What was your impression of these places?

I've never visited, but when I visited family in San Diego this past summer my aunt mentioned them.

She thought we had visited those nuns when we told her about our visit with Carmelite Sisters before heading down to San Diego.

I haven't been to the ones out in San Diego, but my university is run by Benedictine Monks, and their abby is across the street from the university and high school.
