Full Version: What Should I Do?
phatmass phorum > Phormation > Vocation Station
Revelation
Ok so here's the background info for the question: When I was a little kid growing up, we passed by a church everyday, droping my older sister to kindergarden (VERY YOUNG, I have only a faint memory of this, meaning I don't know what I thought at the time), and every time we passed by I would beg my parents to go in and look at each of the stations of the cross. One time they even had a wax display up of the last supper, and w/o possibly having any idea of who was who (~4 or 5 at the time) I had gone straight up to jesus and kissed him on the check.

My question is (and I've debated it for as long as I can remember) am I being called to the vocation of priesthood? I've tried praying about it for almost a year and a half now, and I'm reaching closer and closer to the decision making time. If any one has any idea or comments (please be positive and/or helpful) I would much appreciate it, Thank you and god bless.

You have to do what your heart is telling you. I'll tell you a little about my journey.

I was brought up Protestant but always had a fascination with nuns. It wasn't until I was in my 40's that the only way I can put this is that my heart was touched by the Holy Spirit. I immediately enrolled in RCIA and while there, I realized that I would now be able to fulfill my desire to become a nun. I contacted several orders and was told I could apply by one. I declined their invitation because I thought I was doing what my family wanted, but now I realize that I wasn't ready to accept the Lord's call. It's now been six years since then and during that time it became increasingly apparent to me that I truly have a vocation. I could think of nothing else and I prayed and prayed for guidance. I finally took a leap of faith and reconnected with the community I originally contacted. Now I am preparing myself to enter monastic life.

I guess what I am trying to say is, most people aren't fortunate enough to heard God's voice saying "I want you to become a priest" or nun or whatever...sometimes it takes a leap of faith...but always remember, God won't let you fall.

Blessings!
Fr. Bruno

Well, I guess nobody can answer your question directly on a forum - there are a lot of other questions to ask you before you will find the answer. And in the case of priesthood, the definite answer will only come on the day of your ordination.
I think you should first of all find a spiritual director - someone who has discernent, is able to listen to you and to guide you, is in full communion with the Church, a man of prayer...
God bless !

You have to do what your heart is telling you.

The last time I talked with my SD, I told him I was writting a community and asked what he thought about it, his reply was "Follow your heart" .

I also have a little saying, if your going to follow footsteps, follow Jesus, he will never lead you astray.

If a vocation to the priesthood is something that has been on your mind and on your heart for over a year an a half maybe you should go for it, but I would suggest along with everyone else that you get a good spiritual director (preferably a wise and holy priest) who can help you along the journey and give you the direction you need.

Ummm... a lot of time has passed since the wax statue incident... what has been going on with you in the meantime? Do you go to church? Do you receive the sacraments regularly? Do you understand what priests do?

I'm not saying you DON'T have a vocation, you just haven't supplied the kind of information I, at least, need to help you figure it out.

I'd place less emphasis on an event you barely remember and more emphasis on aptitude, advice from knowledgeable folks, reason, a conscious decision about what to do with your life, and commitment to that choice.

Luigi's answer was very good; I second his advice.
