Linnie,

Is Sarah still with you? I recall that she was (at least) a novice. I remember photos on your website of her in a lovely white dress at a ceremony.

They do not look like they are in full communion with ROME. Does anybody know? Why aren't the nuns wearing veils?!!

No, she has left the monastery, returned to school, and is working on her teaching degree. She is a lovely young woman, faithful to God and to the new path that He has opened for her. I see her every Sunday. What a joy to hear her sing.

Not all nuns wear veils. Wearing a veil or not wearing a veil is absolutely no indication of whether they are in communion with Rome.

I've found nothing on their website that leads me to think they're not in communion with Rome. Granted, I've not scoured it with a fine-toothed comb and I'm open to being corrected. Also, if you see on their "Our Community Today" site, you'll see sisters wearing a habit, some even with veils. Veils certainly aren't a requirement for religious women (nuns or sisters), nor are habits (although there's a bit more to this argument, we've had that discussion on the phorum before so I'll leave that up to people who want to go through the search engine if they're interested in said discussions).

The habit of the Poor Clares of Greenville, SC conforms to the letter and spirit of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of John Paul II dated March 25, 1996, as follows:

"Since the habit is a sign of consecration, poverty and membership in a particular Religious family, I join the Fathers of the Synod in strongly recommending to men and women religious that they wear their proper habit, suitably adapted to the conditions of time and place. Where valid reasons of their apostolate call for it, Religious, in conformity with the norms of their Institute, may also dress in a simple and modest manner, with an appropriate symbol, in such a way that their consecration is recognizable. Institutes which from their origin or by provision of their Constitutions do not have a specific habit should ensure that the dress of their members corresponds in dignity and simplicity to the nature of their vocation."

Simple...modest...with an appropriate symbol( pin, pendant, knotted cord), recognizable. The PC habit has all of these and is in the spirit of poverty, the charism of the Franciscan order.
