When parents had 6+ kids, it was much easier to say that they would encourage one of their kids towards a vocation. Now with one or two children, expected to go to college and become wealthy or famous, that doesn't happen.
My mother put every road block up that she could think of. She refused to sign paperwork to get me a scholarship to the Benedictine prep school. She monitored my mail and threw out anything I received from Catholic colleges, and screened my calls. Every convent I contacted about entering got nasty calls or letters from her in return. She wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer, and wasn't going to let up the pressure on me until I gave into her wishes.
Neither of my foster sons were interested in vocations to the priesthood, but it wasn't from me not encouraging them. I wasn't going to do to them what had been done to me.

You become of age when you reach eighteen. You can do anything you want to do after this age. You don't need to go to a Catholic college to enter religious life. You can go to a large state university in a large city, where there are bound to be a number of religious orders. There are churches which say mass in these large cities. There is a Newman club at the large university. If you don't feel that you can preserve your faith or your interest in religious life if you don't go to a Catholic college, perhaps this isn't where you belong.
