Full Version: French Norbertines Or Nashville Dominicans?

Over at http://www.romancatholicvocations.blogspot.com which is a great site, the header pic of the day is labeled as "French Norbertine Sisters in Rome" but they look a LOT like some Nashville Dominicans, to me.

I know the Nashville OP's habit was french-designed, so perhaps I am wrong and they took their design from the Norbertines, but check out the "vocations blog", picture - if you look to the bottom left (actually at about "8 o'clock") that sister seems to be Sr. John Peter, who you can see here, standing with her blood sister and fellow novice, Sr. Beatrice: http://nashvilledominican.org/News/Communi...ception2007.htm The other novices also look familiar as Nashville novices, and the mistress.

Does anyone know? I'm sure the blogmaster would want to be told if he had a wrong citation on his blog.

That is a picture of the Nashville Dominicans for sure. I saw it a few months ago when reading an article about them.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw that picture today.

Haha yes those are the Nashville Dominicans with previous vocation director and I believe former novice mistress Sr. Catherine Marie talking to the novices (now second-year black veils under temporary vows). Some of those sisters are my teachers now. clap2.gif

I think the person realized the mistake and has now changed the caption.

Good call!

If you ever see a white habit and are wondering whether they're Norbertine or Dominican, check the scapular. Norbertines don't have one. That is, I've seen Norbertines of three different houses and none of them had one, so I think it's a rule smile.gif (I mistook the first one I ever saw for a Dominican... against all reason, because the chances of seeing a Dutch Dominican in habit are negligible. Fr. X, O.Praem, didn't seem to mind... much.)

Are there active Norbertine sisters, by the way? I only know of cloistered ones.

Eh, the chaplain to the Sisters of St. Joseph is a Norbertine and he has a scapular...doesn't he?

Now that you mention it, he did have a kind of flappy thing. I've only seen him sitting or in chasuble, except for one flash when bringing him dinner, though... so I didn't get a good look.

To make it worse, his community seems intent on all wearing different things! (See here for an example...) Men. *sighs* smile.gif

Oh! You're definitely right:

Then the problem becomes: how do you tell Norbertines and Dominicans apart, why don't all Norbertines wear the scapular, and how will I get my dad to buy ice cream for dessert?

Norbertines seem to have that sashy-thing going on round their middles. Dominicans have belts with the Rosary on it.

I think.

Or you could just go up to one and ask for an obscure quote from the Summa. Should separate them out fast enough.
