Full Version: Solesmes Video
phatmass phorum > Phormation > Vocation Station

The week before last I was in Solesmes, and I'm currently thinking about sueing God for not making me a French bloke and giving me a vocation there wink.gif

But amongst all the goodies I came back with (material as well as spiritual) was a dvd: Le Chant mystérieux du Silence. It's a documentary, just under an hour in length, about life at the Abbey there, with a particular focus on the place of Gregorian Chant in the community's life (if you know anything about the background of the Solesmes Congregation you'll know how central it is - and if not, get on and do some googleing!!). There's also a couple of clips with the nuns of St. Cecilia's down the road (quite literally - well ok, down the road and turn left).

Then on the "Bonus" bit there's all kinds of fun stuff.

It's all in French, no subtitling, but I would hazard to guess that even if you didn't have any French you could be impressed by it. It wasn't made by the monks themselves I don't think - if it were it would have been a bit more down to earth in places. But it's still lots of fun.

EJames, have you seen this dvd? I wonder if there are extracts of it on *Tube or something.

Anyway, just a heads up for those who might be interested. You can probably get it on amazon, or maybe through the Solesmes monastery closest to you, or perhaps from Solemes itself: http://www.solesmes.com/

(And the tutor for my course is on there and he's speaking French!!!! Which is of course a DUH moment as...well...you know...he's French. But I spent the entire week hearing him speak in English and Spanish, saying Mass in Latin, with an odd "merci" thrown in here and there when I could convince him that my French was good enough to carry on a conversation lol_roll.gif )

(And as a complete aside: imagine. You live in the town of Solesmes. There are two monasteries, both of which have the full monastic office, differing from each other by 15-30 minutes (the girls are generally earlier than the boys). Can you imagine what it must be like with all those church bells going throughout the entire day?)

I'm taking Julia to Bootcamp. And it has a DVD player. So...

The bells thing is just crazy. I wonder how many people pray the Divine Office in their houses just because they can't get away from the bells. I probably would...
Do they have Angelus bells?

Speaking of bells, that was our church bell ringing "if you don't start walking right now Fr. will fret about having to do everything by himself today".

Quite a few locals turn up to the boys' office, actually. Makes things simpler and gets some exercise in.
Yes, the Angelus (at St. Peter's in any event) is rung out after Lauds and Vespers, but it's in silence. And it's not at the "usual" times because of the office. It might also be done after Sext but I'm not sure.

Thank you for posting this powerful information for us. I know of Solesmes and I would LOVE to go and visit there sometime in the future. Perhaps I can organize a group of students to go.

Another place I would love to go is Fontgombault, also in France. It is a daughter-house of Solesmes (Clear Creek in Oklahoma is a daughter house of Fontgombault).

Can you tell me how you arranged to go to Solesmes? I understand that they offer a 2 week chant course during the summer. Dr. Susan Treacy takes people over there every year.

Peace!

I went on the advanced chant course organised by www.choraltreasure.org. If you take a group of students let me know and I'll help out because I'm now a Solesmes-junkie and will jump at the chance to go back smile.gif

Thank you so much for that information. I will try contacting them to see about future trips. I would absolutely love to go to Solesmes. Alas, the dream and blessing it would be to hear a prominent interpretation of Gregorian Chant LIVE. I think I'd die or at least petition to join the monastery.

Angelus bells ring all over France mostly in villages, but some large towns and cities, like Tours. for instance. people thought i was weird to stop and pray the Angelus in the sidewalk..but hey.. sadly most French i know do not pray the Angelus, and Church bells are ringin every hour, evry where in many places and for the 3 Angelus, it becomes a common place background 'noise' that is ignored after gotten used to for so long. by many.
and the video of Solesmes i have seen, but at Solesmes, as well it is/was available on Ebay, and i have seen it on French amazon, as well it may be at paraclete press.

I used to like Paraclete Press but then I found out that they support the unapproved claims of Medjugorje. That about did it for me and I had a lot of sadness in my heart about it. PPress has so many good things otherwise.....
