I am showing my ignorance, but I have never seen priests with that tonsure before. Is that the tonsure of male Carmelites?

That is Fr. Joseph Marie of Jesus, M Carm. He and Fr. Michael are the first ordained priests of the Carmelite Monks in Wyoming.

Its a very extreme tonsure, no? I think its because they are trying to revive all the traditions and practices that go along with traditional O.Carm monasticism. Anyways, I think its

Now that I have their horarium in front of me I can see where their nap time after recreation comes in that Indwelling Trinity mentioned before. Noon -recreation "1pm A visit to the Most Blessed Sacrament and then a time for quiet and solitude in the cell. 2pm The Nuns gather again in the Choir to pray the Hour of None and the Holy Rosary. This is followed by spiritual reading in the cell." 3pm back to work- my words not theirs. It doesnt say how long the visit to the Blessed Sacrament is.

Im wondering what the closest point of public transport to the monastery is? No Im not heading there anytime soon Im just curious. If someone knows but doesnt want to post on the phorum I accept PMs too.

I'm sure if you wanted to visit, Mother Prioress could arrange for the extern nun to pick you up from the airport or train station. :)

I am in awe of the Carmelite's ability to live the lifestyle they do. Personally, I could never get by on 6 hours of sleep a night. If I get less than 8 hours, I find myself getting irritable, and I start losing my ability to think clearly (assuming, of course, that I had that ability in the first place. LOL) However, I have read stories of people who are able to function quite well on only a few hours of sleep, and obviously these nuns have that ability.

Ahh! I know what you mean. I sleep 10 hours as is! I tend to need a lot of sleep.

Thats good to know, thank you! I will make a mental note of the train option too.

My two cents on sleep. I think of all the parents in the world who get six or less hours of sleep and in comparison any horarium doesnt seem that bad. Babies keep parents up, teenagers same thing, even when the children are adults and on their own the parents may have sleepless nights of worry. In a monastery the religious is a spiritual parent so for me the idea of going to bed late and getting up early to care for, through prayer and sacrifice of sleep etc, my spiritual children (poor kids) so as to get them into heaven .... I say sure why not.

Two things:

--I have a sleep disorder (I went through the sleep test where they put electrodes on your head--not fun). 6 or 7 hours of sleep is out of the question. I need at least 10 hours of sleep, usually more. The good thing is that I am not called to the religious life, so the issue doesn't arise.

--Also, teenage and young women in their early twenties generally need more sleep than males or adults past their twenties. I think it has to do with hormones, but I'm not positive about that. So, it could be that as time goes on, you'll need less sleep. Or maybe not.

Last time I was at Elysburg, they didn't have an extern, but were praying for one!

There are many friends of the monastery who I'm sure would be able to help you our if Mother talked to them. Elysburg really is out in the sticks. ;)

Whoops! I was so sure they had an extern. I must have gotten them confused with the Buffalo Carmelites.

Congratulations to her! :flex2: Does anyone else find it extra edifying to hear about solemn vows, as well as the excitement of entrances and clothings?
