The Traditional Carmelite Monks Of Wyoming

Oh wow, they sound wonderful. I had heard of Mystic Monk coffee and never knew the name of the community that produced it. Way cool, I wonder if those two brothers learned that juggling trick at the monastery.

In The Arms of The Lord

The Salve Regina at the end was beautiful. They are a great community. The Carmelite nuns in Elysburg, PA are close wtih them; the monks have helped them a lot. Just recently a few of them were at the Elysburg Carmel to visit the Sisters. I believe one of two of the monks were ordained not too long ago. They have said that they receive numerous vocational inquiries each week (in excess of five hundred inquiries in the last few years alone.) Here is the website about the new Monastery that will be built for the monks; you can also donate: http://www.newmountcarmelfoundation.org/

It's going to be a French gothic style Monastery; very beautiful! They have pictures of what it will look like. It will be located in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming.

No. They are not 'officially' OCD -- they are of Diocesean right. Traditionally Carmel has men as friars and women nuns. No monks. This is an attempt to create the cloistered life of the nuns, but for men. That's not a bad impulse -- but it is new, which is why they're a diocesean community.

So they're not 'really' OCD but they are 'really' Catholic and in union with Rome and acting with the approval of their local bishop and all that.

They are O.Carm, which I believe do have more hermit-type monks. They also celebrate the Traditional Carmelite Rite of the Mass - so cool!

They are not O.Carm. They are purely of the diocesan establishment. The O.Carms and OCDs don't disprove of them but I have met several who are slightly puzzled by them. Great group though!

Guilty as charged on both accounts. Yes, I went back and looked, they are M. Carm (that's the initials they use) One tiny letter and I've thrown everything off lol. But at least I got the Carmelite Rite Mass part right :)

Thanks for the catch!

Well put .. and interesting, as I was recently talking to a good priest about this, who said almost those exact words .. the Church has traditionally recognized Carmelites as either mendicant friars or hermits (not monks). Monks are the equivalent of nuns, so yes, this is an attempt to create the cloistered life of the nuns, but for men .. not that that's bad, but it's something new to the Church. And many things about them are more Benedictine, like building a large monastery on a big plot of land, though their spirituality is Carmelite. Still, nothing against them .. it's just a new charism in Carmel, with a mix of a couple different monastic traditions for men, including Carthusian. We buy their coffee and are happy to support them .. :coffee: And yes, they are 100% with the Church .. united with their bishop and everything.

By the way, both the O.Carms and OCDs have hermits. I have this holy card of the Servant of God, Padre Jose Maria del Carmelo, OCD - commonly know as "Padre Cadete" it says .. who was a hermit in the Discalced Carmelite community at the Holy Desert of San Jose in Las Batuecas, Spain, where St. John of the Cross was once Prior .. which is still going today, http://www.monasteri...asbatuecas.com/ I'm not exactly sure how it works for them .. but I am thinking they probably become OCD friars first and then get permission to live the eremitical life .. like the Franciscans of the Immaculate do .. who have wholly contemplative houses for both their friars and sisters .. though they first go through regular formation as an active/contemplative (not the Poor Clares of the Immaculate though .. who are a separate branch) Anyway, so it is interesting. I think there are more O.Carm. hermit communities though .. where you enter and are formed to live that life, like our communities in Lake Elmo, MN and Christoval, TX, which have been mentioned above.

Back to the monks in Wyoming, actually there is another new wholly contemplative Carmelite community forming in Brazil that uses the Traditional Carmelite Rite Mass also, http://www.mosteirocarmelita.com.br/ They are neither OCD or O.Carm (though I don't know if they hope to be aggregated into either Order in the future) like Wyoming, though they have some differences which they explain a bit here. They are more in the spirit of the Discalced Carmelites too. They have hermit sisters, if that's the right word, too.

Anyway, yay for all the new communities in Carmel! Let's keep them in prayer  God bless!
