According to Wikipedia (always reputable):

The Papal shoes are the red leather outdoor shoes worn by the Pope. They should not be confused with the indoor papal slippers or the Episcopal sandals, which are the liturgical footwear proper to all Latin Rite bishops. Pope Benedict XVI restored the use of the papal shoes, which are made by his personal cobbler in Rome.

The papal shoes, along with the camauro, papal mozzetta, and cloak (tabarro), are the only remnants of the former red color of the papal garments. St. Pope Pius V (1566 - 1572), who was a Dominican, keeping his habit, changed the papal color to white, and it has remained so since.

The papal slippers were a form of episcopal sandals worn by bishops. However, unlike the (rarely seen) episcopal sandals, which change with the liturgical colour, the papal slippers were always red. However, it would seem that the papal slippers have not been restored as photographs of Benedict show him wearing red shoes inside the confines of the Vatican. The Pope was reported to have been wearing red slippers upon his arrival in Scotland 16th September 2010.

One word: SNAZZY.

I love them- and mean SNAZZY in the very best way! They make me smile so much whenever I see pictures of B16! I hope I didn't come off in a derogatory way :( I know that I had looked up the origin of the shoes and wondered if anybody else had either.

I, for one, really like the Pope's shoes... and would never say anything derogatory about them, even if I didn't like them...

These things always interest me. When asked if there was anything I'd like to see at the Vatican, my first response was the room where the ladies repair all the vestments and tapestries. I've always wondered what Edith Head would design for the Pope.

I like his shoes, but I'm afraid I just cannot approve of his preference for Bavarian beer over Belgian/Dutch Trappist beer. :|
