Why do you like the British monarchy so much? They're Anglican.

In the US, we enjoy a very relationship the United Kingdom, as well as Canada and Australia. Additionally, 60 years of Service is very noble indeed.

Who precisely has she served, and what has she done in service to them?

I too am curious as to who Her Majesty has serviced.

Her Majesty reigns as Queen of 16 independent nations and as Head of the Commonwealth. She is the figure of unity for the majority of English speaking peoples.

Nope.

"Approximately 375 million people speak English as their first language.[40] . . .

The countries with the highest populations of native English speakers are, in descending order: United States (215 million). . ."

http://en.wikipedia...._total_speakers

So about 57.3% of native speakers are American, and it is safe to say that the overwhelming majority of those people do not look to the queen as any sort of figure.

Aside from the fact that she doesn't speak for most Anglophones, what service(s) does she truly provide, other than being the "head" of the Anglican church and riding in cars in parades?

Like any Head of State, Her Majesty has many ceremonial duties that I really don't think Americans can fully comprehend.

What do these "ceremonial duties" do for the average British citizen?

Also, that would imply that you don't comprehend them, either. Therefore, as far as we are concerned, they are worthless.

These increase national pride. This might be a rather novel comparsion, but in the same way a mascot serves his or her school or company, so does the Monarch to his or her nation.

You just compared the Queen to a mascot.

No offense, but you aren't helping your case.

I find some of these remarks offensive. I will not dignify them with the opposite and positive argument to those of you who have already decided that our Queen is a useless figurehead. We know differently. As for saying " they are Anglican" just thank God for the true Faith and pray for those who do not have it, It is a gift to treasure and not our own achievement.

I apologize if any of my posts were offensive. I actually just spent the last 40 minutes perusing the queen's wikipedia page. I have a great respect for her and her country.

I should really go to bed before posting anything more tonight.

I don't comprehend your political system, therefore it's worthless.

I was hoping someone would bash my illogic! Yay!

My husband is celebrating tonight by having dinner with the Lieutenant Governor. He's going to be receiving the Diamond Jubilee medal for his mental health advocacy work. Just one of those silly things the Queen does to show support for her subjects.

No. She's definitely Anglican. You may have been confused because she likes to shop at Walmart. And while Hutterites do make up a large percentage of Walmart's clientele, the royal family *does* like to get a good deal on paper towels and Rubbermaid containers, too. I can see how you might jump to the conclusion that Her Majesty is a Hutterite, but that is simply not the case.
