First, this survey suffers from what I call the “Nonsmokers smoke Marlboros” problem. At the top of a survey, ask: “Are you a smoker or a nonsmoker?” and lots of people who smoke will self-identify as “nonsmokers.” Later, ask, “What brand of cigarettes do you smoke?” and they will say, “Definitely Marlboro Lights!” Ergo, nonsmokers smoke Marlboros.

The results are even more skewed if you ask people at the top of a survey what religion they are. People who have never darkened the door of a Catholic Church will happily mark “Catholic” on such a survey. The behavior they report will count for or against Catholics the same regardless of their actual contact with Catholicism.

This particular survey even admits that less than a third of its “Catholic” respondents even go to Mass once a week.
So, what do we know from the start: We aren’t dealing with practicing Catholics. In fact, a two-thirds majority of the Catholics in the survey are not eligible to receive communion, according to the U.S. bishops (see page 9), since they skip their Sunday obligation.

McGrew directs us to more problems, in the asterisk at the bottom. There we learn that the survey is: “Restricted to sexually active women who are not pregnant, post-partum, or trying to get pregnant.”

So think of who would be included and excluded from this study:

• Included: Unmarried teens and young women who sleep with their boyfriends.
• Excluded: Unmarried teens and young women who follow the Church’s teaching on chastity.

• Included: Married women who are actively avoiding pregnancy.
• Excluded: Married women who are not particularly watching whether they get pregnant or not.

• Included: Promiscuous party girls.
• Excluded: Nuns.

No wonder so many of them are using contraception! But the funny thing is, even once you include mostly lapsed Catholics and eliminate anyone who might mess up your number, it still isn’t true to say 98% are using contraception.

They got that by subtracting the 2% of NFP users in their chart from the 100% of respondents. But look at the chart. It says 11% are using “no method.” By my math, it should be at least 13% not using contraception.

The most shocking news, though, is that the White House is spreading false information about Catholicism in order to provide cover as it removes religious liberties for Catholic organizations.

White House: Retract this statement and correct the record. Stop misinforming the public about my religion for your purposes.

I know this is a serious matter.....but that's so hilarious to read.

I should do a survey on how 99% of people who use a computer use a mouse....

This is overwhelming......sports commentators give better insight when they say things like "the team that scores the most points usually wins."

Hey, after a television crew in Ireland doorstopped a priest at a First Holy Communion mass to accuse him of sleeping with a 15yr old and fathering a son when the priest wasn't even in the same country as the woman at time of conception I wouldn't trust any kind of research/news report/ television programme that's negative about Catholics

I wish there was some kind of broad survey of Catholics who attend Mass weekly about these kinds of issues. It would be interesting to see how the numbers change based on Mass attendance, if they go to Confession, etc.

Deceit is the tool of choice for the liberals/prgressives. Satan also uses this tool, that why he is referred to as the deciever. What was it that was said during Bush's term as President, its not whether the accusations are true or not, its the point they were made. Referring to all the false accusations that were spread throughout the media against his Presidency, while the proofs of their being false were not allowed to be aired.

I don't feel like this is that big of a deal. I think that most people can figure out that children make up more than 2% of Catholics. But it is true that the study was confined to sexually experiences (not virgin) Catholic women. So that should be corrected.

It was interesting to watch this claim evolve through the day. Originally the MSNBC anchor's made the distinction, clear stating that they were refering to Catholic women with sexual experience. By the time it got to the pundit shows that claim had become less qualified.

Well all of these polls are lies, including the catholic ones. None of them are truly scientific in nature. The ones that are still come up with different results. However I will say that I live in an overwhelmingly catholic community and most catholics use contraception. I reciently traveled to Stamples Minnesota which has a sizable catholic community and thou there are some that truly are catholic, most also use contraception.

I don't think someone who descents from Church teaching can truly be considered a faithful catholic. They remind me of the Pharisees. We are suppose to trust God with our whole life to the point where we can even put our life on the line. If we aren't willing to do that then we shouldn't side with something we don't agree with. I wish people would make up their minds. If they truly want to be catholic they should repent and if they don't then they should be converted. I believe evangelize starts within the church. Otherwise, how are we supposed to spread the faith when so many "Catholics" are unfaithful?

I don't think someone who descents from Church teaching can truly be considered a faithful catholic. They remind me of the Pharisees. We are suppose to trust God with our whole life to the point where we can even put our life on the line. If we aren't willing to do that then we shouldn't side with something we don't agree with. I'm not disagreeing with you on this point. I agree that if someone claims to be a Catholic, then they should live their lives according to Catholic teaching otherwise they should stop claiming this title for themselves. However this is why so many people say to themselves, "Catholics use contraceptives" and think that it's more a battle of Church heirarchy vs the government, rather then Catholics vs the government.

I don't agree with the whole "converted" comment but that is a different debate for another time.

Never forget that I go to daily Mass, I pray the rosary, I am single, and I have uses birth control pills, the IUD, and gave myself the best birthday present possible, a hysterectomy. If I had followed the Church's contradictory stance on birth control, My uterus would have killed me. So single and supposedly celibate white guys have no room to talk.
