Quote

RAEFORD — A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because the school told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.

The girl’s turkey and coagulated milk sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the person who was inspecting all lunch boxes in the More at Four classroom that day.

There are so many good reasons to homeschool I'm surprised you've only found 197.

That is #197, not 1 of 197.

Seriously?

If I weren't gonna be a nun I'd totally homeschool.

I seriously thought I was on the wrong phorum for a minute. I see "Reason number... why I homeschool" in emails and on homeschool forums all the time.... Thought I was lost here for a moment.

Saw that article, actually. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was listed as reason number 214 why someone else homeschools. ;) Yeah, it was pretty crazy. If the kid has a *basically* healthy lunch (and I would say a turkey sandwich and banana qualifies-- and is probably more than most preschoolers eat) than stay OUT OF IT. If you're noticing that the kid is bringing a bag of chips and a can of pop every day, you may want to confer with the parents. Don't be the lunch police.

I'm sure that's true, but there's no way I'm taking the chance with my kids...

How are chicken nuggets healthier than anything else?

Yeah, that's one of the more bizarre points of the story.

Well, if I remember correctly, what was lacking from the child's bag lunch was a vegetable. Rather than give him (her?) the veggie from the hot lunch (which is, I think, what they were supposed to do), they gave him the entire tray. And he ate the three nuggets. So, um yeah... he was actually eating the least nutritious item on the plate, I think.

If it was not for my mom, I might agree with this.  If I end up marrying and having children, I will home school them all till they are in College.

You say it.  They want the children to buy their lunches because they are nutritious and good for the children.

Potato chips don't count? I'm pretty sure they count french fries as a veggie. At any rate, I really don't think most school lunch programs are in a place to be overriding a lunch like that on the grounds of "health."

They probably came with 32oz of ketchup, which counts for the child's vegetable requirement. No joke, ketchup is officially a vegetable in the schools.

That's okay, the GOP tried to make pizza a vegetable once also because of the sauce.
