A document by the International Theological Commission emphasises that it is the College of Cardinals that gives the authentic interpretation of the Word of God, not theologians.

They have different but complementary tasks, must constantly work together and are vital to one another. But when it comes to establishing the “authentic interpretation of the Word of God passed down by the Scriptures and the Tradition,” it is bishops under the guidance of the Pope who have the last word, not theologians.

The principle is certainly not new. But today it was clearly reaffirmed in a 35 page document published, in English, by the International Theological Commission and approved by the Vatican Congregation for the Faith. The document’s name is Theology Today: Perspectives, Principles and Criteria.
