My Stammering

As many of you may know, I have stammered throughout most of my life (Since I was about four). I am reading a self-help book by the Stuttering Foundation and am going to buy The King's Speech to inspire me (And because it's just so amesome). Please pray for my success. It will be a long, hard, and sometimes depressing struggle. Anyone that has watched The King's Speech at least has an idea of just how frustrating it can be, and how terrible it makes you feel. It is quite vital that I succeed, as because when/if I am a Priest I will need to speak quite often, and it is also quite vital because it will give me a lot of self-confidence that I have never had before. You can imagine how terrible it is and how much self-hatred can come from not even being able to order your food at a restaurant or simply speak to someone, especially when trying to tell a joke or a story.

However, in the meantime, in this self-help book I get the feeling that I should talk with it about others, so I might as well do it in real life and on the internet. I'm not quite sure how to start, so I would appreciate it if someone else could spark the conversation first.

Saint John Vianney has been my role-model when it comes to the Priesthood. I love him so much. However, I'm not sure what this picture is supposed to imply. Are you annoyed or something?

No, just thought his story related to your problem.

Ah, I see. Well, not quite. He never had a stammering problem. He had a flunking out of Seminary problem. However, both do grab the roots of self-confidence with its maniacal tentacles and rip them straight out.

He also had a lack of confidence in his oratory.

Both my brothers stutter and they are both in positions where they have to speak in front of folks. My one brother was actually put in speech therapy in HS and it didn't help much. Fortunately now that they are in their late 20s they have managed to be able to speak clearly with no issues (unless of course they are upset, nervous)

side story.... I may have once or twice pulled pranks on my bros just to see them get mad and stutter.... (I've only done that in their adult years when I know they can handle it)

Well, I don't usually do the repetitive one that most people refer to. What most people don't know is there are three types of stammering: the common repetitive one, the prolonged speech one "Llliiiiiiiiiiiiiiike this" and, of course, the one where you can't make anything but a noise and sometimes no noise at all. I have all three, but the ones that get me are the last two. Believe it or not, I almost never make a repetitive noise.

However, I'm shocked your brothers stammer when they get angry. Usually, when stammerers are angry, they speak perfectly. The reasons for this are many, but mainly because their speech is connected, not in a choppy mess.

I would recommend not doing this to your brothers, though. This really is a very personal issue that is really sensitive. I don't imagine that you've seen The King's Speech, but in one of the opening scenes, George's father is yelling at him to just speak normally, and you can see tears roll down his cheeks, despite him being a full-grown married man with kids. I'm not saying you're a terrible person, but I know that when my brother made fun of me about it I felt absolutely terrible and hated myself.

I did not know that. My book didn't mention that small detail. Was he simply worried that he wasn't smart enough to wow the people with his speeches, or did he think he didn't have the voice for speaking?

Prayer for relief from stammering

A little known saint of Holy Mother Church is the Swiss Benedictine monk, St Notker Balbulus. He is the accredited patron saint of all who stammer and stutter and, I guess, those who suffer from any speech defect whatsoever.

The film, The King's Speech has highlighted the plight of those locked into this awful condition (it appears to affect many infants as well as adults).

St Notker, pray for those who stammer "Notker the Stammerer" as he is known, stammered all of his life but those who suffer from this condition or, who have a loved one with it, may take recourse in this novena prayer.

Petition prayer to St Notker Balbalus - for those afflicted with stammering and stuttering

Dear Lord through the intercession of your beloved follower, St Notker Balbulus we ask for your help in untying the knots that entwine the thoughts, minds and tongues of those afflicted with stammering and uncertainty of speech.

Just as you took mud and spittle to unlock the eyes of the blind so, also, please help …………………in his/her sufferings and bring them to speak freely and unhaltingly so that they may praise you all their days.

We praise Thee O Christ and adore Thee because by Thy Holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

The current head of all Benedictines worldwide is Fr. Notker Something-Or-Another.

I thought it was a made-up name.

Now I know.

You have to become a saint first :P and that takes humility! :)

Luckily enough for me, being a Saint is on my list of things to do. Plus, humility comes easy for someone that can't speak. You soon realize that you're nothing while God is everything. God can do everything, and you? You can't even speak. How big and powerful.
