CRAZY DOPE POST, YO!

Dean of lay students came by to talk me into staying in the masters program. I was pissed they were going to make me take more philosophy, which I hate with a purple passion. The head of the philosophy department has agreed to allow me to take them as reading classes with texts/topics of my choosing. Plus they will allow them to be 100% covered by bursary. My regular classes are just covered 75%. I suppose that I couldn't ask for anything else, except that they waive the requirement, and they aren't going to do that. She said she didn't want to lose her best student. I'm not above falling for flattery.

I supose being able to gear the class towards something useful like ethics of end of life decisions, rather than the philosophy of the id of ish, will make it tolerable. It will add another year to the process, but it's not like I was on a fast track anyway.

If someone came to me right now and said I had to take a few extra classes I would beat them to death with my comps study binder. Good for you for bearing it out.

Yep, they just told my son he has to pay $1500 dollars to graduate in May, in spite of the fact he was on a full scholarship, and already defended his thesis.

I never understood graduation fees. Um, isn't the point of the education to graduate? Haven't they been collecting tuition all along? Why don't they just figure it into the tuition??

they better be flying in the World's Most Amazing Commencement Speaker for that.

(I had Cardinal Levada (sp?) for mine. That was pretty razzle dazzle. But our ceremony was so long he totally fell asleep during it. lol)

Glad this is working out the way it is. I had wondered and I had kept on praying... but not prying. ;)

Tuition/course fees are too high.
Grad fees are silly and high.

The real purpose of 'grad fees' is to make up the difference in fees/tuition between when you started (too high) and when you are graduating (over the top too high). So it makes sense that grad fees are over the top.

Uh, I am not sure but I think I just coughed up first cousin a syllogism... Horrors. Kind of like a logical hairball. Euck!

Hypothesis: CatherineM, your logic class is contageous. Aaaaaaa-chew!

Where did you put that exorcist? this thread may need his services....

We were suposed to have a movie star who had graduated from my university as a grad speaker.

He decided two days before graduation to NO-SHOW as a protest for something the University President had done (I think it was raise fees, come to think of it...)

Ended up with a pinch hitter who based his talk on the book, "Everything I needed to know I learned in Kindergarten".

That made us feel like our fees were $$$$ well spent.... (state school, no tuition but LOTS of fees!)

Helped that his name wasn't going to be in the program -- Mr. Movie Star was in the program.

can I opt out of the graduation, and just have them mail me my diploma instead?

"Yes... you can choose to not attend the graduation ceremony and have us send the diploma to you. I would be happy to assist you with this. There is an alternative documenting of graduation fee of $3000; do you prefer to pay that by cash, check or credit card?"
