Youngsters!

When I was little we lived in a wide valley along a small river, in a three room house. We had electricity, so we had a large radio in the corner http://www.bidorbuy....DING_RADIO.html where we picked up radio stations from around the country. We had no inside running water- we walked to the pump and filled containers http://photo-diction...ter-pump.html#b

we also had thishttp://outhouseart.blogspot.com/

We also had no telephone, we walked down river to use a party line. To get our mail we walked thru the cornfields, across the tracks and thru the swamp to the local farmer who collected our mail. Thunderstorns could flood the entire valley in a matter of hours and the farmer would come by boat to bring us milk and eggs. We raised watermelons and canteloupes and strawberries.

People still live like that a couple of counties over. Did you have to call the operator to connect you to the person on the phone?

This thread is for old people....like Lil Red.

Here we reminisce about the good ole days!!!

I will start...

Remember those cassette tapes that played cd's? The casette had a wire coming out of it, and you would hook it up to a portable CD player?

First computer..I was 13...Tandy 1000 EX

and yes, I rocked the extra external floppy drive.

and these were the floppies

oh. heck. yeah.
I still use that cassette thing on occasion and I grew up playing on a similar computer set-up, yes including the external drive for 5 1/4 floppies along with the later arrival of 3 1/2. Our telephone was also a rotary one like this one:

and our tv had bunny ear antennas and knobs that you had to physically get up and turn like this one:

Remember using a pen to 'fast rewind' or 'fast forward' the cassettes tapes? Sometimes done so you don't wear out the batteries in your getto-blaster or walkman?

Or because it was in danger of being "chewed up" by the machine :(

I can remember recording Simon & Garfunkle on my BRAND NEW Casette Player....

And listening to the Giants win the Series on my brand new sony transistor! (Till they decided we couldn't have those during the lunch hours..... kept us from running around during RECESS - yes, I remember when they let us have that!!!)

looked a lot like the one above... and probably cost my uncle close to $50.... when rent on a HOUSE was going for about $100 a month....

Now I will go hunt up some pictures! :)

Ah... the mimeograph. You used to have to type (or write) stencils and then they would put them into this thing and it would make copies.

If you made a typo you corrected it by rubbing off the ink on the back with a RAZOR BLADE.... !

This one is longer, but shows the whole process... and there is somethign about the video below that feels like a trip to the machine cemetery...

And this is the first car I remember my family having -- the Green Packard. (I thought they named the football team after them - Go Green Bay, Go PACKARDS! I thought that for the longest time!!!!

Maximilianus

Going on family trips had the added benefit of making one look like a TV news camera man, because the camcorders where huge.

My very first word processor (and no that is NOT a photo of me....but we all did look like that!) Yes, it DID include a dedicated daisy-wheel printer -- and it printed (drum roll!) one page every 4 minutes! Woww!! And we could store up to 60 pages on one floppy disk. See more about the floppy disk below....

Loved those floppy disks! They were a mere 8 inches big... and really were floppy!

Anybody remember Word Perfect?

Loved the TV set pictures... we didn't get color until after I was out of the house!

I remember when the neighbors did... we had a party and watched a TV program together to celebrate... 30 people crowded in a living room to watch this in the mid 1960's:
