present law only requires you to abstain from alcoholic beverages for one hour before communion, first or otherwise lol, but it is laudable to do so for at least 3 hours before or from midnight the night before, following the traditional Eucharistic fast.
however, there is absolutely no reason to wait until 18 or 21 for First Communion or confirmation... I don't think either of those, whatever order they're offered in, should be pushed off to anywhere remotely near the ballpark for alcohol consumption to commence.
unless you're talking adult converts, in which case, 1 hour is required, 3 hours or starting from midnight the night before is recommended. although assuming this is taking place during the Easter Vigil, I'd recommend abstaining from Alcohol on both Good Friday and Holy Saturday, so that pushes it to about 48 hours.
