I was just watching the Science Channel and this commercial aired,

Apparently it's also airing on "CNN, Comedy Central, Discovery, History Channel, Science Channel, MSNBC, even FOX!" and will be for the next two weeks.

On the Science Channel.. Seriously?? Revolting..

All these big names so blatantly hating on religious freedom.. Just sad.

It's called an advertisement. Somebody pays for a block of 30 seconds to a minute of time and can use it however they like, within reason. Just because it runs on the Science Channel doesn't mean they endorse it, or at least no more than they endorse Mighty Putty.
In any case, how is it different from the commercials for the Mormon church? It's proselytizing for a religion. The Catholic Church runs ads for itself as well.

Its sad but if you have the money you can buy the advertisement space to do more or less what you want. There's a campaign in London at the moment, where by a group have bought advertisement space on the sides of buses, the ads say 'There probably isn't a God so stop worrying and enjoy your life' and other such slogans.

Not necessarily true. Catholic Vote tried to buy an ad for the Superbowl back in 2009 I believe or so and NBC turned them down because they said they were not interested on issue ads (as the ad in question promoted life although in a non-divisive way). Of course once you realized NBC allowed the PETA ad filled with sex to air during the same Superbowl, then it became clear NBC was pushing politics with its ad choices.

You might have the money, but the station can still decide.

"Bishops want to be free to force their dogma on people who don't want it". Yeah. That is exactly what the bishops want to do. What a doofus.

Did anyone notice the nun figurines in the background?

Somehow I doubt if most channels would give space to ads calling for people to defect from Islam.

Have you seen the other ads that run on the Science Channel? None of them are like this one. The way it came off when compared to Mighty Putty really made it seem as if it represented the views of the Science Channel as well, since this is the only political-type commercial I've ever seen them air. And Mighty Putty isn't an objectionable opinion; this is.

In any case, how is it different from the commercials for the Mormon church? It's proselytizing for a religion. The Catholic Church runs ads for itself as well.

But she wasn't proselytizing for anything, she was simply attacking the Catholic Church. (Notice how she only says that we need to leave the Church -- she doesn't say where to go, just to leave it.) She insulted the authorities of our Faith, while neither the Catholic Church nor the Mormon Church's ad said, "Joel Osteen / your Imam / Richard Dawkins is trying to force his dogma on you!!!1" Catholics and Mormons were positive, while she was negative.

Not a single time in the video did she tell anybody to leave anything. She was just crying about those mean old bishops trying to "force their views on people". It's a political ad - one with stupid positions, sure, but in America you don't have to be smart in order to be allowed to have views.

Oops. Sorry, you're right, she didn't, I got that from the website linked to in the video, which had this:

I understand this makes people feel ire, but this is what is called freedom of speech. People who spend their money to buy adverts get to choose the content, so long as said content falls within FCC guidelines and decency/obscenity laws. For every viewpoint there is an opposite one. So this one was aimed at Catholics...and there's surprise at that why? The Church is the largest Christian church in the world and it gets a lot of press. Julia Sweeney is a former Catholic. I doubt she'd be the one they go to to make a "break free from Islam" spot. Catholics find this upsetting? Get some money raised and buy a spot to refute. It's the public forum where ideas and opinions are freely exchanged. If you want people to take Catholics seriously, and if you want the Gospel spread, then be serious about it. Live it. Let your actions say more than millions of dollars of useless advertising.

I'm sorry, I thought being a Christian means we get the short end of the stick more often than others?

Sometimes we just need to pray rather than rant, I'm learning this even now as well. Otherwise, nothing that the media does nor companies surprises me when they marginilize religion (specifically Christianity).

Personally, I love how its switched from how this mandate is forced upon us, to how the Bishops are forcing 'dogma' upon others. Of which the term dogma is entirely misused and taken out of context. I love it. It's not even that leftist, I feel as if any ignoramas could have come up with this.
