It is rare to run into other Catholics who are film buffs or that collect Criterion titles, many of which are also on the Vaticans top film list. I am starting a thread to see if anyone around here collects these more expensive than drugs films.

About twice a year B&N has a 1/2 off sale and I try to pick one up. Right now I own:

The Red Shoes
The Seventh Seal
Days of Heaven
Seven Samurai
Island of the Lost Souls
Anatomy of A Murder
12 Angry Men
A thin Red Line
The Great Dictator

I want

Gold Rush
Modern Times
Vampyr
Au revoir les enfants
M
The Lady Vanishes

And a few others

I tried to post this an hour ago, but somehow, the post I made hasn't shown up here yet. So I'm posting it again. Here goes:

What do you mean by "Criterion titles?"

The Criterion Collection is a company that focuses on selling films that are perceived to have artistic merit. I've watched a few of them that a friend had. That was my introduction to the worlds of Kurosawa, Naruse, Bresson, the Dardenne Brothers, and Tarkovsky.

And Brother Adam is right: They are not cheap. Hopefully someday, I shall be able to afford to buy a few of them for myself.

haha. Yeah. Like I said - maybe 2 total a year when I can get them for 55-60% off. They are the best possible editions of some of the finest films ever made with incredible essays and supplements.

I was thinking these titles would be like $200-300 the way you were talking. It looks like they are $30ish online for the blu-ray. That's only maybe $5 more than the cost of a new blu-ray movie coming out nowadays (at least in my neck of the woods).

I guess when you are catechist dirt poor 30-40 a movie is insane. I never pay more than $10-15 for a new release. I watched a Thin Red Line last night. Amazing film, Malick is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. I use Tree of Life in my catechesis.

Oh I definitely understand :). I'm not dirt poor and I still refuse to buy movies! I won't even rent new releases unless I have a free new release rental at blockbuster... blockbuster is literally my back yard. I'm so cheap I won't even get the movies out of the $5 discount bin :|

Haha. I love movies though and we do not have cable, or local tv, or internet at home. Instead we do buy a few now and then. It gives us total control over what comes into our home.

That sounds like a great setup, but I know for me I would be unable to do my job without internet in the home.
