Some say that Mr Thomas himself had AS. I personally can't say that I LOVE the DSM.... yeah.. I've looked for Patron saints for autism/aspergers and found next to nothing. As aspies we are sometimes told that we have bad work memory but better other memories...but sorry, I'm not extremly good at anything like Temole Grandin and Beethoven. Socialisation can be tough (eg church coffee) due to the fact that NTs don't really understand Aspies/Autistics. We also tend to avoid eye contact (I even think it can be rude to look someone in the eyes). The sad thing is that modwrn psychology doesn't really know how to deal with it. I ended up in a very strange place. It was weird. I went into a small room with a sandbox and some toys...you'll understand if you've been through it yourself. After having received an Aspergers diagnosis I think things have at least been a little better. Take heed, my AS friend tolld me. AS is not a reason to fail living a good social life. You know, one of those long, drawn-out things they're reading to you instead of talking to you like a normal human being would, or (even worse) instead of actually answering your question. I was just coming in to mention St Bernadette. :) Yes, she had some pretty clear symptoms of autism - language problems and literal concrete thinking, to name a few. I am wary of retroactively 'diagnosing' people, but because of the fame of Lourdes there is a lot of documentation about her (and many things written by her) that do make it seem extremely likely that she was on the autistic spectrum. Interesting. I wonder if St. Therese's sister, Leonie, had autism? She was the "outcast" of the family and found it difficult to relate to others. I love Leonie, though. I've read her story and there is evidence that she had an autistic spectrum disorder, though they didn't know about Asperger's back then, I don't think. A bit awkward maybe, but my parish is small and I really want to have a bit of community andMark makes really good cake, so I put up with the awkward feelings. I'm less awkward now than I was, too, because there are so few of us and its been a couple of years. In larger groups I just feel awkward unless I have friends and don't think I know how to have a conversation. I've been wondering a bit what the cause of me feeling literally unable to talk sometimes (like, I can think lots of sentences that I really want to say but I'm too afraid of opening my mouth even though I'm talking to someone I generally trust and there isn't anyone else vying for his attention and I should basically be able to talk), and I can only think of how I wasn't able to speak much at all when pressured to and not given a few minutes to think as a child. (Sorry that that's so garbled.) has anyone else had this experience or felt the same sort of way or whatever? (And in explanation for everything, I'm typing on my phone and I'm too lazy to edit.)
