I just added all of my mileage for the week of 7-1-14 to 7-5-14 and I did 13.07 miles. That does not include 6-29 and 6-30 which total 8.61 miles. Please someone let me know if I am giving you what we need to keep moving. thanks

Weeeelll.... 13:07 + 8.61 = 21.68 miles.  Pretty impressive!!!!

Anyone else have mileage for the week from Sunday 6/29 thru Sat 7/5?

I'll post tomorrow with the total counts of those who have posted numbers thru 7/5 and we'll travel to our next stop.

If everyone could try to post mileage numbers for the current week just after Saturdays (just drop it in this thread) I'll plan to do the updates on Wednesdays.

Hello, Everyone!   We have the Stats for our Travelers this week.

We have the following Travelers who have registered:

Week ending 7/5/2014:

AnneLine ........................ 15.33

BrandelynMarie .............. 3.25

CarterMia ....................... 10.00

CrossCut .........................  2.00

Maximillion ..................... 6.00

SpemInAlium ................. 20.00

TheresaThoma ...............  6.00

Tigger60 ........................ 21.68

TOTAL TRAVELERS:   8

TOTAL MILES:   84.26

This is an excellent start!!!!

Several travelers show markedly higher numbers, most likely because they are using pedometers and/or have a regular exercise habit. Pedometers register ALL walking done throughout the day not just the actual miles done in exercise.  It seems to give them quite a head start over everyone else!

SO... unless anyone objects, if you are NOT using a pedometer, you should also include some extra miles to register your routine movements throughout the day. (Even if you are using a wheeled vehicle like Max, it needs a battery because you are using energy!)

So... in the future when you submit your totals, please consider adding an appropriate amount TO your mileage if you wish.  I suggest 5-10 miles per week, but it is your choice.  How do I get that figure?  when I have been sick and barely able to move, I still managed to clock 10 miles on the meter during a week, so it really isn't an outrageous thing to suggest!

Comedy or not... BrandelynMarie, here it comes!

July 11, 2014

Escondido, CA to Palomar Observatory, Palomar Mountain, CA

As with all these maps, be sure to select the little walking man.  You may want to switch between looking at the 'terrain' and the 'google earth' option to get the best view of this part of the journey.

Weather:

San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Escondido, CA

91/66 F.   SUNNY

Hellhole Canyon Preserve, Valley Center, CA

86/63 F.   SUNNY

Palomar Mountain Observatory, Palomar, CA

75/64 F.   SUNNY

Palomar Mountain State Park, Pauma Valley, CA

91/61 F,   SUNNY

The weather should be VERY WARM so be sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing.

Take frequent breaks.

We will be starting to head into a mountainous area east of San Diego this week.   Our journey will take us from a hellhole to visions of God's Firmament.  Unlike the travel between San Diego and Escondido, now we will be heading into areas that include a lot of mountain driving and back and forth switchback roads.  It may look like a very indirect route... but you cannot GO straight over these mountains... you have to follow the roads.

Be aware that there are a lot of animals that call these mountains home - including mountain lions  and rattle snakes - so watch where you put your feet and keep with the group!

First stop....

Hellhole Canyon Preserve, Valley Center, CA

This is one of those rugged areas where people who enjoy hiking and climbing in rugged terrain enjoy immensely.   However... so do some people who want to use the more isolated areas for other things... less savory.  So don't wander away from the rest of us in this part of the journey.

But something tells me this article may tell us something about other things that go on in this area.... and check out the photos -- good and bad!  (Some of you may want to NOT click on this link.... nothing inappropriate, but just kind of sad as it is a modern-day ghost town that has been used as a drug manufacturing area by some people....  Pray for them.)

Maybe it is time to head for a view of something more heavenly, more beautiful....

Palomar Mountain Observatory, Palomar, CA

http://www.astro.caltech.edu/palomar/

Mount Palomar was one of the very early observatories that was set up on Mt.Palomar a little over a hundred years ago, when the air quality was still very good.  Newer and better observatories followed.  Unfortunately, now the pollution has changed some of their usefulness ... but it still is a remarkable place to visit!

This is an article about driving from Oceanside (on the coast, west of where we have been all last week) to the Palomar Observatory.

http://drive.subaru.com/win06_roadtrips.aspx?page=1

The biggest polution issue the observatory faces is - LIGHT!   The bright lights of surrounding cities make it difficult for the astronomers to do their work.

This is a good example of the issue of how the light pollution affects what the astronomers can see....

I had hoped we would be able to use this as our base camp, but budget constraints have turned this into a day-use only camp.   Sigh.   Here's an article about the closure....

But it still is a fantastic place!   (And we'll be spending the nights at the observatory, anyway!)

maximillion

Two hours of rolling yesterday.

I am so longing to get my scooter fixed (this coming week). I would be off and rolling all day.

Can I have credit for doing some really hard things this week. Effort +++.

Absolutely, Max!!!!   I think you should certainly take the '10 hours for just getting through the week' credit at a minimum.... and probably add a bit to that.  I saw  your prayer request... praying for you....
