Preparing To Quit My Job

6 weeks from today I will be Lord willing putting in my 2 week notice at my job and be done right before christmas. Lord willing I will be moving to the monastery in January. I have wanted to join them for over 5 years but had to pay of student loans, etc.

I have been with my current employer for 4 years as a RN. This will be a big change to finally join the monastery. I am very happy to make this change but also alittle nervous because I have always feared change.

Any advice ? I am very ready to do this financially. But its also hard to jump in and give everything over to God.

I haven't been in that exact situation (yet). But I will be praying for you as you take the step! (and remember half the fun of jumping is that feeling of "flying" in midair!)

I can't give advice; I just need you to tell me if it's as liberating as I imagine it will be.  I've also been with my employer these last 4 years as an RN...can't wait to leave, especially if it's for the convent :)

Openness to everything.

It's going to be wonderful. You know them well, so certain things will be exactly as you imagined, and other things will be nothing like you thought or wanted. If you try to be open to everything, God will show you exactly why you're meant to be there.

Change can be SO scary. I had daydreamed for almost two years about flying off to my community, but when I was actually sitting waiting in the airport, I was shivering with nerves, missing my family so badly I was ready to get the first plane back to them, and have absolutely no memory of the lovely book I was reading which had been given me by my godmother. But - whatever we have to change, whatever we have to give up, it's all so we can be free to run to the ultimate safety of the person who never changes, Jesus Christ.

I'm thinking of you often, and if other people's experiences are anything to go by, there will be so many blessings over the next few weeks that you will enter floating on a cloud :)

Blessings ! It will be a big change, but one you've worked, prayed, and waited for.  You will never lose your nursing, it will just get re-interpreted, especially when some incident in the monastery seems to turn it into a Trauma Center, and your skills are greatly needed !  You will be glad that you have them, and so will your community.

  • 2 weeks later...

As this mile stone moves closer, so has my fear of change kicked up. Thankfully the Lord has shown me today that I am making the right decision again.

I am now less then 6 weeks until I vacate my job

Dominican Nuns Menlo Park

I just wrote this quote from St. Francis de Sales to Carla...it might help you too :)

Our prayers are with you...May God grant you all the graces that you need for each day!

Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life;
rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise,
God, whose very own you are,
will lead you safely through all things;
and when you cannot stand it,
God will carry you in His arms.

Do not fear what may happen tomorrow;
the same understanding Father who cares for
you today will take care of you then and every day.

He will either shield you from suffering
or will give you unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace,
and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

The beautiful words-of-wisdom written by Sister from the Nuns at Menlos Park is BEAUTIFUL.  And also, I might add,  just what I needed at this time in my life as I am making a living situation change.  It doesn't have to do with a religious vocation, but I come in here and read for just those kinds of helpful words and prayers.  I haven't posted on here for a VERY long time, but just couldn't help sending a big THANK YOU to Sister for these words.  Yes, change is hard for us ... but let's just think of the changes that our Dear Lord Jesus faced when he was on this earth, right up until His death.  I have been praying to Our Mother of Perpetual Help and I feel strongly that these words were an answer ... one of a couple that I have received in the last couple of days.

Many prayers for you as you prepare to enter.

It is only natural that you are apprehensive at this time but the Lord will be at your side all the way.

God Bless You.

Thankyou all. I have worked very hard within the last two weeks, being fatigued kicks up my anxiety with change. I am thankful to be off these next 4 days. I am at the monastery until Saturday. Being here ignites me to continue to know that this is where I need to be and am meant to be Lord willing. I lived here all summer while commuting one hour to my job, and it helped me get ready. Now that I am much closer, with 2 months before I join (sometime in January) I am excited but afraid to open the door. I will open the door with Gods Grace and help, and a blessing from my Abbess. I have wanted to do this for almost 6 years, God has pulled me this direction , and now its close to the time I follow thru. I know that I will grieve my professional career, 8 years in healthcare, almost 5 years as a nurse , but I will carry my skills and medical knowledge into the monastic life where God can use it here.
