End of watch: September 1, 2015

Lieutenant Charles Gliniewicz, age 52,  was shot and killed while investigating suspicious activity.

At approximately 8:00 am, Lieutenant Gliniewicz radioed his dispatcher that he was stopping to investigate three suspicious males that he observed near Route 12 and Sayton Road in Fox Lake. Shortly thereafter, he radioed in a foot pursuit. When backup officers arrived, they found Lieutenant Gliniewicz mortally wounded. They also discovered that items were missing from his duty belt, including his firearm.

Lieutenant Gliniewicz was a U.S. Army veteran. He had served with the Lake County, Illinois Police Department for 32 years.

He is survived by his wife and four children.

turns out this guy was a creep who committed suicide to avoid it being exposed that he was stealing from a youth group. He was using the money to fund his porn addiction. He elaborately staged it to look like a shooting. What if someone went to jail or got the death penalty because of this guy.

"In a shocking twist, investigators said Gliniewicz, a 30-year veteran of the force, had been stealing from the Fox Lake Police Explorers program for at least seven years, using the money for personal expenses such as personal loans, gym memberships, travel and visits to adult websites, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said.

Gliniewicz, whose Sept. 1 death sparked a fierce manhunt for the killers and a national outpouring of grief, shot himself twice with his own .40-caliber service weapon after radioing in a call to investigate three suspicious men.

“Gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the law enforcement community," Filenko said.

Filenko said that Gliniewicz, 52, used his experience staging mock crime scenes for children learning about police work to make the scene look like he died in a struggle. He was found near a former concrete plant, an area known for graffiti, drugs and squatting.

"This was an attempt to mislead first responders and individuals into believing this was a homicide scene," Filenko said.

The investigation also has revealed involvement on the part of two other people, whom investigators did not name because the cases are still open. Filenko also said that Gliniewicz improperly obtained federal surplus equipment available to police officers.

Filenko said an analysis of more than 6,500 pages of text messages from Gliniewicz, and bank statements, indicated that Gliniewicz began realizing about six months before that his misdeeds would most likely be discovered. Filenko said the amount of money involved is in the "five-figure range."

The texts included "extremely incriminating statements" that indicate that Gliniewicz realized that an ongoing audit of Fox Lake's finances by a new administration would eventually lead to him, investigators said.

Gliniewicz's death was a national news story for weeks. He received a hero's funeral at Antioch Community High School, where thousands of police officers and mourners paid their respects."

Thanks for correcting the record, Maggie. Although I hesitate to condemn someone who does not get their day in court.

I suggest praying for the dead.

On another note, Maggie, someone in your position should not be gasping at other people's sins. I'm sure you agree.

I'm not gasping, in context of the thread it's an instructive case that jumping to conclusions in either direction is foolish.
