When and where did the Charismatic Movement start?

In my discernment, I have noticed that there are some Orders that are Charasmatic like the Franciscan TOR Sisters and the Disciples of Our Lord Jesus Christ. I have also been invited to a Catholic Charismatic Conference by a friend but I declined because I was uncomfortable with the idea. I don't understand the whole praying in tongues thing. So how did this start? I'm not judging but I am curious about its origins.

The Charismatic Renewal, in the Catholic Church, began at Duquesne University (in Pittsburgh) in the late 1960's, I believe 1967. Although I tend to be pretty wary of the Renewal, I've found most of the Charismatics I've known to be very faithful Catholics. The Popes since Paul VI have all said fairly complimentary things, so that's something to consider.

What I know of the history of the movement confirms what Amppax has written. This article:

https://www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/charismatic_renewal.htm

...from EWTN, does not cover the history but does make some outstanding points I think will interest you. It is authored by a man with an STL.

This article from the Diocese of Lafayette in Louisiana gives a bit more historical info than Amppax provides:

And this article from the Catholic World Report gives a fairly extensive history that places the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the context of other Christian charismatic movements:

There are some great Catholic charismatics. I like and support aspects of the movement. However, as with anything, there are elements I'm not so keen on, am skeptical about, and think less than desirable. I think the positive elements and negative aspects should be spoken of by the Church more. What is good can be encouraged and the other aspects challenged. What often passes as speaking in tongues, and the pressure to emulate this behavior in some groups, would be one of those to challenge. The same goes for healings too. But it doesn't always form a large part of some meetings. In some groups and countries it's more about a style, openness and an attitude to the spirit. In Latin America this style of worship is far more common, especially in Brazil etc. I would say the US is influenced more by the trends and behavior of American Pentecostalism. But it varies, as is the case with 'movements'.

I suspect the lack of direct personal familiarity in the majority at the Vatican lends them to mostly giving the movement the benefit of the doubt [plus they see how effective and good it is at drawing a crowd in some other denominations].

Maybe check it out but choose not to leave your whole brain at the door :smile2: Check out youtube etc. How a convention or conference is will often be different to a local group or parish. Do you like this style of worship? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFG9Mz2VgNA
