Landlord issues

I had a phone call from the estate agent and it's almost certain that I will get the apartment I've applied for. They're just waiting for references. I'm a bit worried as they wanted one from my most recent landlady, and I was unwilling to list her as a referee because I had problems with her. Long story short: I share the house with her son, he left the oven on while drunk and then passed out on the sofa, and I saved both our skins because I was up ridiculously early for a hospital shift and I discovered the fire before it moved beyond the oven. I was angry because this little incident showed that the landlady hadn't had new smoke detectors installed, as she assured me she had before I moved in, and because she tried to downplay the incident as minor (!). Please pray that they will accept the older reference from a previous landlord. I really want this apartment and I'm anxious at not knowing for sure where I'll live.
