This evening at Vespers, Mr. Michael Phelan, Saint Anselm College Class of 2012, was received into our community as a postulant by Abbot Mark. Please pray for Michael as he begins his monastic life with us. Please also pray that our community will continue to be blessed with holy vocations. [This monastery now has at least three men in formation, most of them recent graduates of their college.]

From Prince of Peace Abbey (Benedictine Monks) in Oceanside , (southern) California. The event has passed, but I copied what the abbey posted. It was news to me that they had a novice.

Our novice, Brother Jason Chung, will make his first profession of vows as a monk at Mass, 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29. The occasion is open to the public.

From St. Andrew's Abbey in Valyermo, (southern) California, again quoting from the Abbey articles:

THE VALYERMO CHRONICLE AROUND & ABOUT THE ABBEY

"Bishop Gerald Wilkerson ordained our brother Angelus Echeverry to the order of priesthood on June 24th."

"ANOTHER JOYFUL OCCASION for the Abbey occurred on July 11th, the Feast of St. Benedict: Brother Columba Corrie OSB, made his simple triennial profession of vows. The joyful event was attended by many, including family from Scotland."

I see she worked for A Nun's Life - an interesting preparation for entering religious life!

Yes--and continued in this ministry during her IHM Candidacy. She is a really remarkable young woman.

From Mount Saviour Benedictine monastery in New York, taken from their July monthly news:

"In mid-month our community was especially blessed with the final profession of Br. Michael on the 15th and with the presence of Abbot Anselm of Pluscarden and Abbot Cuthbert of Farnborough who received his vows. Br. Michael left the following day for a home visit. Gone fishing."

  • 2 weeks later...

From Mepkin Abbey (Trappist monks) in South Carolina, a new novice, who used to be a diocesan priest in Ireland. This is the same monastery where Brother Juan made first vows at the age of 67 (post of August 20 above). The community apparently has no objection to older vocations.

#################################################################

On Saturday evening, Aug. 26, shortly after First Vespers for the Feast of Saint Bernard, the monks of Mepkin gathered in the chapter room with Abbot Stan. We assembled to pray with Father Jim Caffrey, who having completed the year of living with us a postulant, had asked to receive the novice habit. In the brief but meaningful ceremony, Father Jim surrendered his white hooded postulant shirt, and not only received the white robe, white scapular, white cloth belt and white cloak of a novice, but took on a new name as well. He will now be known by the name Father Columba. This change in his name will acknowledge his beginning a new chapter in his relationship with God and us. I also gives a nod to his roots in Ireland and the great Saint Columba as well as the learned Dom Columba Marmion, a well-known Irish Benedictine abbot and spiritual author.

I'm just realizing that you're heading into your last week before entrance.  Please enjoy this precious time with family and friends and know that you're in my prayers as your relationship with God continues to deepen.

Novice joins Benedictine community at Saint Meinrad [Indiana]

August 07, 2017

In a brief ceremony, Novice Noel Zamora was clothed in the Benedictine habit at Saint Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad, IN, on August 5, 2017. He now begins a year of monastic formation, including study of the Rule of St. Benedict and monastic history.

Novice Noel, 40, most recently served as a priest of the Diocese of Lexington, KY.

A native of Angeles City, Philippines, he earned a bachelor's degree in communication from Ateneo de Manila University in 1998. For two years, he was a college instructor at the University of Assumption before deciding to study for the priesthood.

He earned a Master of Arts in Catholic thought and life in 2004 and a Master of Divinity in 2007, both from Saint Meinrad School of Theology.

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lexington on May 19, 2007. Fr. Zamora's parish assignments have included Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, Holy Spirit Parish and University of Kentucky Newman Center, all in Lexington; St. Andrew Parish, Harrodsburg, KY; St. Mary Parish, Perryville, KY; Jesus Our Savior Parish, Morehead, KY; St. Julie Parish, Owingsville, KY; and Morehead State University Newman Center.

He also was a guest columnist for the Harrodsburg Herald from 2012 to 2015 and chaplain of the Morehead State University football team during the 2016-17 season.

As a novice, he takes a year off from formal studies and trades. The novitiate is a time of prayer and learning intended to help a novice discern his vocation as a monk. At the end of this year, a novice may be permitted to profess temporary

From St. Joseph's Abbey (Benedictine monks) in Louisiana, 13 September, 2017:

"In a private ceremony held in the Monastery Chapter Room this morning, Brent Kalar and Brandon LeBlanc were accepted into the novitiate, a year which will be marked by a separation from the world and an acclimation to one’s new life in the monastery. Novices take classes in monastic history and spirituality and contribute to the life of the community in prayer and work.

Brent... hails from Minnesota and New Mexico. Brandon... comes to the Abbey from Kaplan, Louisiana.

Please congratulate these men and keep them in your prayers during this important year at the Abbey.

Visit www.saintjosephabbey.com/vocations to learn more about a vocational discernment to religious life."
