"St. Benedict's Abbey (Kansas Monks)

Today at Vespers these three young men knocked on the door of the Abbey and were welcomed into the postulancy by the Abbot and the monks! Please continue to pray for Thomas Hoopes, Peter Rumpza and Timothy Simpson as they continue to discern their vocation within the Benedictine community."

From St. Anselm's Benedictine Abbey in New Hampshire, two items:

1. Brother Stephen Brian Lawson will be ordained October 14.

-------------------------------------------------

"September 29 at 6:30pm ·

2. This evening at Vespers, Mr. Douglas Enzor was received into our community as a postulant by Abbot Mark. Douglas comes to us from Boulder, Colorado. Please pray for Douglas as he begins his monastic life with us. Please also pray that our community will continue to be blessed with holy vocations. #monklife"

---------------------------------------------------

So that's the third postulant to enter St. Anselm's this year. They didn't join as a group, so they're a little harder to keep track of, but they've been trickling in all year. And there are others already in formation.

In further news from Newark Abbey (Benedictine monks in New Jersey)...

10-16-17

"WHAT'S GOING ON AT NEWARK ABBEY??
"Thursday of this week the monks voted to admit Michael Woodruff into a period of temporary vows beginning of November 11, and to allow Mark Dilone to begin novitiate (date to be announced); we also have another young man staying with us for the month, who seems very interested in pursuing his inquiry into joining the monastery here. There are also two visiting monks who are both intending to join us eventually. If you’ve been watching the abbey’s Facebook page, you know that we have two newly professed 25-year old monks as well."

This monastery has an interesting history. It was found in the 1800's and thrived in Newark, where the monks ran boys' high school. When the character of the neighborhood changed pretty drastically, the community voted to relocate to somewhere more rural. That is now St. Mary's abbey in MOrristown NJ. However, a number of the monks didn't want to relocate - they chose to stay and continue the school, still enrolling their traditional demographic of rather well-off Catholic boys, but they also started enrolling less privileged local boys.

They struggled with enrollment and finances, closed the school for a year, and then re-opened using an innovative approach to education - the Rule of St. Benedict is the basis of everything. The students have an assembly every morning and listen to (among other things) the reading of part of the Rule of St. Benedict.

After the division of the community, the number of monks held steady for a while and then began declining. They currently have eleven monks in final vows, including two younger men who joined and persevered in the last decade or so. Then a couple more men joined two years ago - they're in simple vows. Now they have another man taking simple vows, plus a postulant-soon-to-be-novice, two monks who plan to transfer their stability to Newark, and another man pretty interested in their community. If all comes to fruition, they'll soon have a community of eighteen!

If you know any prayers, say 'em for these guys - the community does good work and could use more men of faith, virtue, and talent!
