From Mother of the Redeemer Olivetan Benedictine monastery in Louisiana:

Br. Laurent makes Simple Profession

Laurent and James  On March 25th, at Mass with our Oblates, Br. Laurent Abila O.S.B., made his First Profession of vows before abbot James, and the monastic community. The vows are for a period of three years.  Br Laurent joined us in the fall of 2015 after ending his service with the U. S. Army. He is 46 years old.
Br. Laurent serves the monastery in a variety of roles. He is our sacristan for the chapel, performs housekeeping for the common areas of the monastery. He helps Fr. James with grocery shopping and often cooks the main meal for the community. He provides haircuts when needed, and will sometimes add a song with his voice and guitar at Sunday Mass. Lately, he has been caring for our small herd of goats in the back woods.
Earlier this year he visited and made a retreat at Holy Cross Monastery in Rostrevor, No. Ireland, a monastery in our Congregation. On. May 26th, Br. Laurent was installed in the ministries of Lector and Acolyte.

From the Carmel of St. Joseph, in St. Louis, MO:

"On Saturday, June 17 Barbara Redington received the habit of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and took the religious name of Sr. Helen Marie of the Holy Eucharist."

A Pham member entered there last year on the feast of St. Mark (April 25th), as a postulant I suppose. Would this be her, transitioning into the novitiate? Does anyone remember her Name-in-the-Phamily?

A postulant entered the Summit monastery of Dominican nuns on the feast of the Sacred Heart. Went to school at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (I think the Newman Center there is staffed by Dominican friars). Her degree is in electrical engineering.

Been away awhile...!  Thanks for the post, Luigi!  The updated Summit website is really nice.  When did the community switch back to the traditional, full veil and collar?  Interesting & lovely to see various orders doing this!

Former Manchester United player ordained a priest

Belfast-born Philip Mulryne made his debut for Manchester United in 1995

A former Manchester United and Northern Ireland soccer international has been ordained a priest of the Catholic Church.

Belfast-born Philip Mulryne (39), a member of the Dominican congregation, made his debut for Manchester United in 1995 before moving to Norwich City in 1999.

He played only a handful of first-team games with Manchester United when he was competing with David Beckham and Paul Scholes for a start, before joining Norwich City for £500,000 in 1999.

He also played for Cardiff City, Leyton Orient and Kings Lynn, and won 27 caps with Northern Ireland before retiring from football in 2008.

Following his retirement from football, he became involved in various charity activities.

The Bishop of Down and Connor, Noel Treanor, invited him to join the priesthood on foot of his volunteer work. In 2009, he began studying for the priesthood.

Family and friends were in attendance at Saturday’s event in Dublin’s Saint Saviour’s church.

He was ordained a priest for the Dominican Order by His Grace Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia OP.

Archbishop Di Noia is Assistant Secretary at the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and he travelled from Rome for the ceremony.

In his homily, the Archbishop told the congregation: “You did not choose me, but I chose you.

(If he talks like the Man U fans I've heard, he's going to be spending a lot of time in the confessional. But then, maybe his Dominican formation formed it out of him... Let us pray.)
