Matthew 24:

6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: 8 all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs.

After living in Florida for more than fifty years, my perspective is...   "been there, seen that, the t- shirt is already old".

They say this every time there are natural disasters.

Life can change in an instant, the Lord told us to watch no matter what, even in times of peace and prosperity, but nobody knows the hour. People should be aware of the fleeting nature of life regardless.

I don't believe anything I see or hear on the news - it's ALL alternative facts, and has been for decades. So I think we really don't have anything to worry about.

The point of earthquakes, famines, disasters isn't to scare people up. Jesus is just saying that everything everything must be destroyed before it can be made new. All the forces, contradictions, oppositions, etc. in man and nature must finally spin out of control and give birth to something new. Jesus isn't giving a lesson about the weather. He also says that when the end comes, they will be marrying and giving in marriage, eating and drinking...no "post-apocalyptic" world like in the movies and fundamentalist sermons. When Christ appears, all must be destroyed, because there is only Christ, or rather, all must become Christ and Christ must become all...we aren't hurdling toward an endpoint, we're in a womb while the world gives birth to Christ. Stuff happens to people every day...just because we got a couple of hurricanes doesn't mean the world is any different than it was yesterday. We're just shocked when we lose control.

We've been in the End Times for 2,000 years.

Well said!  My take is: The Return of Jesus was immanent from the time of The Resurrection to me, this is why St Paul writes about it as in his time, later he corrects it to the time of The Return is unknown.  We are to experience many things that will shake us up before the actual Return of Jesus.  If we look at history many times indeed have we been absolutely shaken up and it continues today.

We do not know when Jesus will return, only that He will.  The end times as they are called are perhaps not so much indicated by wars and natural disasters as a horrific trial that The Church will endure "follow her Lord in His death and resurrection" (see below). The Ultimate Trial of The Church.

Before Jesus does return, this is what The Church tells us:

CCC http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s2c2a7.htm

The Church's ultimate trial

675 Before Christ's second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers.574 The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth575 will unveil the "mystery of iniquity" in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.576

676 The Antichrist's deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatological judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism,577 especially the "intrinsically perverse" political form of a secular messianism.578

677 The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection.579 The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not by a historic triumph of the Church through a progressive ascendancy, but only by God's victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven.580 God's triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world.581

Every time there's a natural disaster, folks start with the end times, flowers blooming in Israel, weather changes etc.  He's got our back.  No one knows the hour, so lets clean up our yard debris, burn the calories from all the carbs eaten,  stink from not being able to shower and thank God we're here to complain and conspire!  Besides, I don't believe anything from the NY Times.....just sayin'
